@ESPNChiCubs You might be seeing tweets on this, and its true, former Cub Bill Buckner has passed away. What a hitter he was. Met him a few times. Good guy as well.

@Jeremy Schaap Just got off the phone with Jody Buckner, who called to me that her husband, the great Bill Buckner, one of the finest men I've known, died this morning. She wanted to share this statement: "After battling the disease of Lewy Body Dementia, (cont.)

@Jeremy Schaap Bill Buckner passed away early the morning of May 27th surrounded by his family. Bill fought with courage and grit as he did all things in life. Our hearts are broken but we are at peace knowing he is in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." Bill was 69.

That’s a quote from the family. Just didn’t have quotes at the start.

Was he sick? He was supposed to have an autograph signing at the cubs convention back in January but apparently cancelled.

The Man had a tough life. I have a shirt with Mookie’s ground ball gling through his legs.

It's very sad that a man who had such a great career will forever be known by one horrible play. RIP.

Watched that World Series with my brother and my dad..My dad was pulling for the Mets and my brother and I were pulling for Boston..I can still hear my dad howling when Buckner missed the ball. I always thought it was really shitty the way the Boston fans treated Buckner.

Yeah there's gonna be a lot of hypocrisy if the city of Boston and their fans came out big in mourning and do ceremony honoring Buckner.
It's not how you treat someone in death it's how you treat them in life.
Bill had to flee Boston and move out West. Boston treated him like shite after 1986.

He was part of two of Vin Scully's best calls
Buckner goes back to the fence and it is gone
behind the bag, it gets through Buckner, here comes Knight

Both sides made peace and Buckner has thrown out the first pitch in Fenway and has been honored by Boston and Red Sox fans since then.
Red Sox fans and organization have every right to mourn and celebrate a great player

Buckner resigned with Boston after the Royals and played his final season with the Red Sox

Game was already tied, and with his bad knees there was no way he was beating the batter to first base. Was always unfair to associate him with that play.
