UGA has far fewer threats than Texas, but Texas HS football is ungodly and UT is the main player in all those recruiting battles.

Conference wise they're in a far superior position.

Recruiting edge goes to UGA at the moment, but UT will turn around their recruiting quickly under Herman.

Overall though I wouldn't tag UT a sleeping giant. They've won a title this century and played for another. They're just in a rough patch at the moment.

UGA is a true sleeping giant due to our last championship being in 1980.

Texas for sure, but Texas HS football is extremely overrated, and combined with Texas' penchant for not getting out of their own way, it's not as straightforward as it seems for them to get good again. My own HS was in the state championship game (5A D1) and it was hard to watch. 7-on-7 has ruined everything, and does nothing but pump finesse players into Texas colleges. There's a reason we are all trash at defense nowadays. UGA doesn't have that problem at all + far superior defensive recruiting and arguably an easier road to their championship game as long as you ignore whoever comes out of the west.

Weather, geography, level of competition, girls... shitty stadium, shitty academics, shitty fan support.

Well one has to compete in the same conference as Saban every year so...

And if you eliminate that factor it'd still be Texas

Instate for sure. That said, I wouldn't classify TCU, Texas A&M, Baylor, SMU, Texas Tech, or Houston as legitimate threats to UT. Texas really only has to worry about LSU in the Houston area and Oklahoma in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. Sure, A&M will get a player here and there that they want, but Texas is going to out recruit A&M 9/10 times in the state of Texas.

Georgia, on the other hand, has Clemson, FSU, UF, Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee so, so close. That's a lot of blue blood programs all within 4 hours or less of Atlanta.

How can you tell someone is a detached from reality Georgia fan...

Look, I like Georgia a hell of a lot more than I like Texas, but this isn't a serious question.

Georgia is a fringe Top 15 program, but has trended up in general over the past 40 years, to higher than that. Texas has trended down a bit, but is still a stronger program in a better position, hands down.

It's Texas by a wide margin. Georgia is in the East, but they still have to win the SECCG. That's something Texas doesn't have to do.

The Big 12 will have a championship game starting next year.

They are also supposed to be taking the top 2 teams in the conference as opposed to division leaders. I really like this move for getting the best 2 teams and most deserving teams from their conference into that game.

Texas. Uga has too many big-time schools in closer proximity.

I woudln't say "far fewer". Let's get real; baylor, TT, Houston, TCU....these are teams that in the grand scheme of football have only VERY RECENTLY been making any real noise. For the most part Texas has to keep OU, Texas A&M, and LSU away from their in state guys.

Whereas alabama, Auburn, Tennnessee, Clemson, UF, FSU, SC, and GT are all within about a 6 hour drive from Athens.

Another thing that seems to often get overlooked is that despite being a longtime national powerhouse and THE premiere program in Texas for decades, they still went 35 years between titles (1970-2005), which is right at our current drought. It's not like Texas has been winning titles every decade and the argument is they should be winnign MORE of them...they really haven't really won a TON more than UGA has. Hell they only won the big 12 three times, in a far weaker league than what UGA plays in.

eta: I see 12pence already hit on that

They've won the Southwest Conference (up to 1995) 25 times (19 outright).
They've won the Big 12 3 times with 5 total appearances.

How many has Georgia won?

ETA: I didn't mean that to come off as a dick. I generally don't know. Off the top of my head, I remember only remember a championship over LSU and the loss to Alabama in 2012.

If you scroll down the Sooners and OkSt's rosters its pretty nuts how heavy they are with Texas guys. I'd much rather be tasked with trying to lock down Ga

Espn picked UGA as the top recruiting job in CFB this past year fwiw:

Georgia must go no farther than its own backyard for the nation's top talent, has minimal in-state competition for recruits, has top-notch (and ever-improving facilities) and a proven track record of sending players to the NFL. If you can't get players here, check your pulse.
