Backe was a beast in the playoffs, though.

I personally think the Braves 1998 rotation was clearly the best out of the bunch.

Greg Maddux 18-9, 2.22 ERA, 251 IP, 204 SO, 45 BB, 0.98 WHIP
Tom Glavine 20-6, 2.47 ERA, 229.1 IP, 157 SO, 74 BB, 1.20 WHIP
John Smoltz 17-3, 2.90 ERA, 167.2 IP, 173 SO, 44 BB, 1.13 WHIP
Denny Neagle 16-11, 3.55 ERA, 210.1 IP, 165 SO, 60 BB, 1.22 WHIP
Kevin Millwood 17-8, 4.08 ERA, 174.1 IP, 163 SO, 56 BB, 1.33 WHIP

All five of their starting pitchers won at least 16 games and finished top 10 in the NL in wins. They also had a combined 3:1 SO:BB ratio and all five starting pitchers pitched at least 167 innings that year. Very impressive stuff.

You can't really argue with any of the mid 90's Braves rotations. When you get a 3.55 and 210 inning from your 4 and a low 4 ERA from your 5, things are going pretty well.

Those 90's Braves staffs were incredible.

That 98 staff was also insane:

You could easily argue that the 1996 or 1997 rotation was better, but the difference would be marginal. So let's look at 1998. The Braves' starting five combined for an ERA of 2.97 -- a stunning 1.27 lower than the NL average. They were stingy with hits, walks and homers. Maddux and Glavine had two of the top 10 pitching seasons in the history of the Braves franchise. Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz finished 1-3-6 in ERA. Glavine, the NL's only 20-game winner, captured the NL Cy Young Award, and Maddux and Smoltz tied for fourth in the voting. All five starters were among the top 10 in wins.

1998 staff couldn't beat Brown, Ashby and Hitchcock.

That's because the Braves' offense disappeared like the always did come postseason time.

They scored a grand total of 3 runs in those 4 losses, including being shutout twice

Brown and Hitchcock were pretty dominant throughout those playoffs.

No doubt the Braves' and Astros' offenses blew in the playoffs though.

Braves had some awesome staffs in the 90s, how many world championships did they win again?

As a team, the Braves batted .272 and averaged 5.1 runs a game in the regular season that year.

In the postseason, they batted .233 and averaged 3.6

They had a team ERA of 3.25 in the regular season and 2.74 in the playoffs.

It wasnt the pitching

1, which just so happened to be the year their offense actually showed up in the postseason

As an Orioles fan, I will get kicked out of the club for this, but the Braves staff was better. Why? Because the Orioles were so much better defensively. In fact, I think they were the best defensive team ever and a lot of the credit for four 20-game winners goes to the guys in the field. Seriously. Brooks Robinson, Mark Belanger, and Paul Blair are all at least in the conversation for the best defensive player at their position. Not that year. Ever. And the O's still got near Gold Glove level defense from catcher (Elrod Hendricks), 2B (Dave Johnson), and LF (Don Buford). the worst defnesive player on the team might have been Frank Robinson, and he was pretty good with the glove.

Amazing defensive team.

And then there were the 1948 Braves:

"First we'll use Spahn
then we'll use Sain
Then an off day
followed by rain
Back will come Spahn
followed by Sain
And followed
we hope
by two days of rain."

The Greatest Pitching Rotation of All Time — and It’s Not Close

By ADAM STERNBERGH

This is catnip just in time for Major League Baseball’s Opening Day: A great story by Pat Jordan on the Phillies four pitching aces. (The Phearsome Phoursome? Has this been copyrighted yet? If not, I call dibs. Oh, wait.) As an added bonus: Nate Silver uses the magic of statistics to definitively answer the question: What is the greatest four-man rotation of all time?

The answer isn’t all that surprising — but the margin of victory definitely is. The 1997 Braves rotation of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and, er, Denny Neagle (hey, he won 20 games that year and was surprisingly really good) has a collective Value Over Replacement Player (or VORP) of 649.4. The next highest-scoring foursome, the 1956 Indians (Early Wynn, Herb Score, Bob Lemon, Mike Garcia) has a score of 562.8. In fact, the rotations that ranked 2nd through 10th all have scores clustered loosely around 500, ranging from 494.7 (the 1970 Cubs) to the Indians.

Which is to say, the difference in VORP between the 10th best rotation and the 2nd best (68.1 points) is less than the difference between No. 2 and No. 1 (86.6 points). (Also interesting: The storied 1971 Orioles rotation of Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson and Dave McNally — 20-game winners all — doesn’t even make the Top 10.)

So next time you’re on your barstool (maybe tonight!) and someone starts an argument about the best rotation of all time, whip out this handy chart and let him know it’s not much of an argument at all. Unless, of course, each of the Phillies Phoursome equals his career-best season this year — in which case, Silver figures, they will unseat the ’97 Braves as No. 1.

Would like to see the model he was using since I don't believe it. I'm voting the '71 Orioles.
