He was also a legend off the track for the amount of poon he tagged.

Everham went out on his own to start Dodge. The sky was the limit for those guys. Stewart was really good as well. Gordon would've won about 2-3 more without the playoff format. He was winning races with the young guys, Latarte and Gustafsonnas crew chiefs. I quit watching when he retired, when Nasacar started with the competition caution nonsense. Its giving out participation trophies. Dale Sr would've laughed at that. No more if any strategy is involved. It had fans on the edge taking 2 tires, a quick squirt of fuel, all under green. Product totally sucks because they've attempted to level the playing field with crappy drivers who have no business out there.

It's really hard to compare across eras. Part of me thinks it's gotta be Pearson or one of the old heads because those cars were harder to drive.
I agree with most of the thread that I'd take Gordon over Jimmie or anyone since, and I was no Gordon fan.
The playoff really complicates everything. You can't just count titles anymore to make your list. Does anybody really put Joey Logano in the same category as Tony Stewart? Years from now will people be saying he's clearly better than Kyle Busch or Kevin Harvick? I doubt it. At least I hope not.
With this new POS car, and all of NASCAR's BS, even win totals are going to paint a weird picture. Larson won 10 races the last year in the old car. Nobody has won more than 6 since then. Can't pass, GWC finishes, etc. make so many results just feel random and unearned.

Don't forget the Car of Tomorrow disaster. Any old timers remember that lame strip or metal the teams had to put across the roofs at restrictemor plate tracks? After the 2000 Daytona 500? Earnhardt simply laughed at that concept. Went from running 200 mph, to 180? Total snooze fest. Fans hated it

A good argument could be made for Tony Stewart being one of the best also. That guy can get into anything with a steering wheel and be highly competitive.

I read somewhere a while back that if Jeff Gordon had been racing in an era without the NASCAR playoffs, he would likely have won seven championships.
Besides Jeff my pick would also be Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison, Jr. Johnson
I hated the stupid playoffs. The Winston points system rewarded consistency for the whole year. Changing that and taking away racing to the yellow started my slide of apathy for the sport. I now couldn't tell you who is even a top racer, and don't get me started on the CART/Indy car split ruined a once great series.

I don’t think number wise he’s one of the top guys, but man, in his day he was damn good. Could wheel anything and was personally recommended by Jeff Gordon to Ray when he was starting up the dodge factory cars.

Newsflash: INDYCAR is back . If you liked CART then, you’ll love INDYCAR now. Better racing too

This has been verified.
There is a website that uses the old points system
for every year since the playoff system was implemented and Gordon would have won 7 under the old system. Harvick would have won 4. Jimmie only 3.

Like I said, I only gauge modern era, not Grand National era
Basically from Winston Cup to today
That is why my rankings are how they are
If you add the Grand National Wild West rules be damned era, You get Petty, then Pearson

Dale is too low
I am not going to rank him higher for dying

But that's why so many people didn't like it. You could have guys like Terry Labonte win only two races in 1996 and win the cup. Don't get me wrong -- I was a huge fan of Terry, but he was a gentleman, and most fans loved rooting for more aggressive drivers like Dale.
