Baseball needs a speed limit

True or false
Personally I think baseball would be a better game if pitches over, say, 97 mph were banned.
Cue all of the simple-brained “that’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard” responses.

How would you enforce this

Not that I agree with the idea, but you could say any pitch over 97MPH is an automatic ball.

Can you elaborate more on why? Just curious
Safety thing? Competitive advantage thing?

They’d have to give a long (like 10-years) warning/grace period so that pitchers would have time to change their approach and for development at the youth levels to adapt.

What is the goal? Have more balls in play? Less pitching injuries?

This is the stupidest fricking rule ever
Are we gunna cap out how fast a receiver can run routes too?

Not competitive advantage because everyone would have the same rules, but yes safety and more just about maintaining a balance between pitching and hitting.
Are we not approaching a time when the average pitch is almost 100mph?
One thing I think people forget in discussions about sports is that it’s ultimately a game for entertainment. There is no “natural law” of baseball, and people don’t have some sort of inalienable right to throw 100mph fastballs.

I think that’s a bad analogy, because the relationship between receiver and defender is not analogous to that between pitcher and batter.

They could just modify the ball like they've done for home runs but to slow down pitches.

Just quit while you’re behind.
Your proposed rule is one of the dumbest ideas I’ve ever heard

It’s not that high but velocity is way up. I don’t agree with your rule at all but I get the overall point. Pitching injuries in pro baseball are absurd to the point where TJ seems like a given for a young starter now and it’s trickling down more and more to the amateur levels
I’m not sure what the fix is, I don’t think this is it because the enforcement of it would slow the game down one way or the other and pitching isn’t like driving a car

Hasn’t there been talk of moving the mound farther back?
If the mound is a fixed distance, and if we are reaching the limits of human hand-eye coordination and the brains ability to process information while not reaching the limits of the combination human strength and power pitching mechanics, the game will start to break down.

so you're literally proposing we get rid of one of the main reasons for professional sports, which is showcasing peak human physical performance

I have seen a ton of dumb post on this board. This just moved up to #1. Congrats.

Well the one point you raised was bad. Maybe come up with a defensible counter point before telling me to stop having a friendly discussion.

That’s part of the problem. After TJ the pitcher gains an extra couple of miles per hour.

We need more offense in the game but that can be accomplished via
robo-umps not having generous zones
lower the mound
banning the shift

damn, hard to find a better display of self-righteousness than assuming anyone who doesn't agree with you is simple-brained.
