Red Sox-Dodgers least-watched #WorldSeries? ? Game 2 in four years. Second straight game to hit a four-year low:

According to Sports Media Watch, Tuesday’s Game 1, played at 8 p.m. ET local time at Fenway Park, came in at an 8.2 rating and 13.76 million viewers. That’s a 6 percent drop in ratings and an 8 percent drop in viewers from 2017’s Game 1 between the Houston Astros and the Dodgers. Comparing 2018’s numbers to the ratings behemoth that was 2016, it’s even worse. This year’s Series is down 27 percent in ratings and 29 percent in viewers from Game 1 between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians in 2016. Game 1 ratings haven’t been that low since 2014 when the San Francisco Giants faced the Kansas City Royals. In fact, they’re the fourth-lowest Game 1 ratings on record.

Game 2 didn’t fare better, scoring a 9.9 overnight rating, a three-year low. (Viewership numbers aren’t yet available for Game 2.) That’s a 10 percent decline from Game 2 for the Astros and Dodgers in 2017, which drew an 11.0 rating. But unlike Game 1, the disparity between 2018 and 2016 isn’t as big. Cubs-Indians in 2016 pulled an 11.2 rating, which is just a 12 percent drop

And it is best case scenario with 2 big market teams with national followings

That being said, baseball is doing fine in local markets

I thought this would happen

2 years ago you had the cubs to drive ratings

last year you had the Stros hurricane story, plus the dodgers being in it for the first time in a while

This year, the Dodgers just feel stale after last year, and the Sox dont have any real excitement. They have won titles recently, and their star players arent exciting to bring out the casual fans

The Yankees were who MLB needed this year to move the needle

At one point there was a commercial between pitches. The game is inherently too slow for a faster paced world.

thank you for providing all sides of the story

so we can now just say all sports viewership is down. not just when it is convenient to bash the nfl.

baseball is boring. they need to start letting players do steroids like the nfl so we can see 50 guys hit 50 homeruns.

Seems like these games always go super late, especially for the East Coast. Could that be what's affecting viewership?

Shorten the season. Baseball is not meant to be played in late fall/early winter. Hell, football season is past the halfway point and they're still playing baseball.

So weird considering it’s killing in local markets.

I know I’m watching. I figured most baseball fans would too.

They are

Just so happens the last few years have had situations that have brought in non-baseball fans too

Games run too late for people in Eastern time zone. 9 inning games running past midnight is not ideal.

I have watched most of both games but the next day at work has sucked as a result.

Games in Boston should have first pitch promptly at 7:30 pm est. Games in LA should have first pitch promptly at 8:05 pm est.

I don't know how you can compare any World Series ratings to World Series featuring the Cubs and Dodgers making their first World Series appearance in 29 years. Also both World Series were close and compelling to watch. You didn't know which team would win. It seems inevitable that the Red Sox is going to beat the Dodgers in four or five games and the games have been very boring to watch so far. Can't blame people for not tuning in.

The NBA's earlier season start probably has more to do with it. I'm watching the Pelicans over the World Series. I have a rooting interest in the Pels.

I watched some of the last two World Series because of the teams in them. I don't care about the Red Sox or Dodgers. I'm obviously not a baseball fan. I'm sure there's a lot more like me.

I’d say the MLB got what it deserves after the fan interference call.

ETA I also blame David price. Number 1 he’s a tool number 2 he pitches so dang slow. The game crawls when he’s on the mound and his stuff doesn’t make up for it.

Games are late. And I’ll usually watch NFL or NBA if there is a choice.

That being said, the Red Sox & Stros series was great. The WS seems like a let down after that series.

How do you know ratings would be worse? A lot of people are tired of Los Angeles and especially Boston sports success. They can't stand the sports teams in those cities. I know because I'm one of them. I would have been a hell of a lot more interested in watching an Astros/Brewers World Series.
