of course you'd say that... he got 62.1% last year. did he get a single hit, HR, plate appearence, putout, assist since then?
no so i don't see how his case should have got better
of course the writers didn't put in babe ruth unanimously so they have proven to be bitches
Do you believe Ozzie Smith is a HOFer? Because Larkin has better offensive numbers across the board (More doubles, triples, homeruns, RBIs, runs scored, better batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, etc...). Larkin was also one of the best defensive shortstops in the game during his prime. How is that not HOF worthy?

The election process is stupid. Barry Larkin wasn't good enough to be in the hall of fame last year but this year despite no difference in his career accomplishments, he's a hall of famer?
This first ballot, second ballot shite is asinine. These guys are either hall of fame players or they're not.
sometimes teh voting can be petty but the thing I like about the process is it seems to functionally limit the number of people elected in a single year
that is kinda cool really - because it is supposed to be a very limited number of people
Next year will be interesting as we may see Bonds, Clemens, and Sosa all snubbed... when at least Bonds and Clemens are generally considered to have been great before when they supposedly started using

You just described the Pro Football Hall of Fame Election process to a tee. They're even worse with making deserving players wait longer than they have to.

the Hall is in a delicate situation... they don't want steroid guys in there, but they shouldn't go the other way and put in Mark Graces and Rick Hellings
Uhh... he isn't in the same category as the Mark Grace's and Rick Helling's. His was one of the premier hitting and fielding shortshops during his time. Well deserving... I don't see how your statement even correlates to Barry.

Bonds will eventually get in because he won three MVPs before anybody ever accused him of performance enhancing drugs. Same thing with Clemens. The achievements of players like McGwire, Palmeiro, and Sosa are a lot more dubious in the voters eyes.

The Hall of Fame became the Hall of hte Very Good a long time ago. in my opinion there are waaaaaay too many players in the Hall. They need to be ALL TIME GREATS and the clear cut best players of their ERA (12 years minimum)

This was a little different. Ruth had to compete with like 60+ years of baseball history and about 30 years of eligible MLB players to get in. Look at the class he got in with. Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Christy Mathewson.
I would assume some writers were more concerned with trying to get others in because they figured everyone else would vote for Ruth (and possibly because they disliked him).
Hell, Nap Lajoie had a fricking team named after him, but he did not make the initial class. Neither Cy Young, Connie Mack, or John McGraw.
Cobb actually had the highest percentage of the first class of 98.23%, while Ruth had 95.13% (tied with Honus).
Of course, Seaver is known to have the highest induction of 98.84% of the vote. However, I found it interesting that Cool Papa Bell and Josh Gibson had 100% of their vote by the Negro League Committee.

I always thought Larkin was a very overrated defensive SS.
He was the master of making a routine grounder look difficult.

After Cal Ripken, Larkin was the best all around short stop of that era.

This is probably a dumb question, but I don't know jack crap about pro baseball and only VERY casually follow it.
I saw that he was the '95 NL MVP. Do you stat folks think he deserved it over one of the braves pitchers? I lived in Georgia so that's why I moderately kept up with the braves, but I rememebr Maddux and company being lights out in 95.

Yeah, but could Barry Larkin do a back flip?
Larkin is one of the best SS's ever. He deserved the HOF nod- which btw, was not even close (he got over 86%). He was a great defender at the premium position in baseball, he was an excellent hitter, and a great base runner. He did everything extremely well.
Quote from Bobby Cox: "To me, Barry Larkin was a ‘dream’ player. He was an outstanding leader who had great physical skills. When you look at his all-around talent and ability in the field, at the plate and on the bases, he might very well have been one of the top two or three shortstops of all-time. He really has all the credentials you think of when you talk about Hall of Fame players. If there had been a draft each year for clubs to build their team from scratch, Barry would have been the first or second pick each year over the course of his career. He was just so well rounded and had all the skills.”
BTW, I think Bagwell should be in as well. Not sold on Morris, but would like to see Bagwell and Raines make it.

Baseball hates Mormons. In all seriousness, the man won multiple MVP's and is my childhood hero. Vote him into the HOF!
