Thanks for the memories Coach

Look at how the football and athletic department turned around under his watch.

from the 80s to now

That clip of an empty Camp Randall Stadium for a home football game prior to Barry is just a stunning contrast. About 10k in the stands for the game before Barry started. 4 seasons later the Badgers won the Rose Bowl with 70k of their fans in Pasadena.

One of the biggest turnarounds in college football history.

Wasn't he a notorious a-hole and difficult to work under his leadership?

Nonetheless, he was a great coach and AD. Wisconsin's football and basketball team have been great under him as AD. Did Wisconsin give Baylor their toughest game in the tournament?

Not that in tune to the happenings in Madison, but the players asked for him to coach in their bowl games after Bielema and Anderson left so the players at least liked him.

ETA: Plus did you know Jake Ferguson was his grandson?

a-hole? Probably, but he headed a very good Athletic Department and wielded a lot of influence in the B1G. Difficult to work with? Eh, nah...

Barry Alvarez and Bret Bielema were extremely close to one another. There was a bitter falling out when Bielema left for Arkansas, but that seems to have mended over the years, which is good.

Gary Andersen... different story. Despite the wins, Barry admitted that was one he didn't do well on. There was never a cultural fit + Andersen, quite literally, said admissions was one of his primary drivers for leaving. That was a blessing in disguise, though he did help bring the 3-4 to Wisconsin. Now have a coach that understands the foundation of Wisconsin football.

Good football mind for sure. He had a blueprint of how to make Wisconsin as relevant as possible with the talent available and stuck to it through many head coaches. Plus his face used to get really red when the B1G kept getting left out of the playoff which was always kinda cool to watch. Served on the playoff committee in the early days.

There's definitely a paradigm shift in college athletics in which AD positions are being manned less and less by former coaches and more by management professionals with MBAs. It was bound to happen with collegiate sports evolving into more of a business.

However, when you've seen the erosion of your athletic program the way Arkansas fans have in the last decade, you find yourself yearning for the 'Coach Emeritus' type of AD who has passion for the university and doesn't excuse losing or hand out godawful contracts.

Huge a-hole.

The fact that he was AD and voted himself in to coach the Rose Bowl was bad enough, but he also took a pro-rated salary as coach in addition to his AD salary.

I watched that video this morning and admit I got a little choked up. Alvarez, Donna Shalala (former UW chancellor) and Pat Richter (former AD) were all instrumental in changing the whole culture in the athletic department when they came on board.

As far as BA being difficult, I'm fairly plugged into the UW Athletic Dept and the word is that BA has an good-sized ego (most successful coaches do and he wasn't called "The Emperor" for nothing) and he was tough but great to work with and his strong suit was schmoozing the big $ donors. He was the perfect fit at Wisconsin both as coach and AD. He did great things for UW athletics.

Back when I first moved out here he would come out a couple times a year and rent out a $10,000/night villa and party it up with the football coaches for the weekend. Seemed like a decent guy.

Maybe it's just me, but it always felt like he intentionally made sure none of his football coaches would ever be considered as successful as he was. The fact he's at a Big 10 school and seemed to not want to give assistant's raises to keep them seemed...not smart, and it was at least partially responsible for him losing two head coaches.

That is pretty much fake news. Wisconsin is frugal to an extent but will pay competitively when needed.

There has been zero correlation between pay before the hire and performance from the coach. Its always adjusted more after its proven here.

Bielema had to leave with the new wifey. He had residual bachelor issues and at the time the SEC was super hot.

We were not gonna pay Aranda what LSU was going to. Its just not the culture.

Andersen was not a good fit since he loved the JUCOs and that doesnt fit the culture at an academic place like UW.

Through all the changes- the program has rolled on staying pretty strong and consistent. He now has a HC and DC that both played here and seem very loyal to the school. That's Barry.

What’s the deal with the constant showing of the narrator in that video? That was odd. And when they did show him, they only showed his back or just his mouth. Should have left all of that out. Ruined the video

He mad a great move in Chryst. He has done a fantastic job in his 6 years and had some solid units (just not enough to get over the CFP hump).

Absolutely. Wisconsin is a developmental program, so you’re never going to lure star power that you see at some other schools. You compensate by finding coaches that understand the foundation of maintaining what makes this a strong program year-to-year — the men at HC, DC and OC are all Wisconsin graduates. One of them, Jim Leonhard, has turned down multiple high-profile jobs to stay in Madison. Also, he’s one of the 25 highest-paid assistants in the country, which, as you said, is needed for a DC of his caliber.

Baylor was impressive.

What is noteworthy for Wisconsin is that since 1994 they have the
most combined ncaa bb appearances and bowl games in the country.

Alabama coming to Madison for a game in a couple years!

At this point I'd take a mattress on the side of the road to replace him.
