That is pretty much fake news. Wisconsin is frugal to an extent but will pay competitively when needed.
Bielema had to leave with the new wifey. He had residual bachelor issues and at the time the SEC was super hot.
Andersen was not a good fit since he loved the JUCOs and that doesnt fit the culture at an academic place like UW.
Through all the changes- the program has rolled on staying pretty strong and consistent. He now has a HC and DC that both played here and seem very loyal to the school. That's Barry.
I'm no Wisconsin fan, but this is spot on.
Bielema played up the "Wisconsin didn't pay well" angle, but he had a litany of issues off the field and Jen reportedly hated Madison. He jumped to a job where the AD would be passive and hands off, and it was his undoing. Without Alvarez to keep him between the ditches, he crashed and burned in embarrassing fashion.
Like many, I raised an eyebrow when Gary Andersen left, but Andersen's an odd guy and Wisconsin has pretty well been acquitted on that one given how his time at both Oregon State and Utah State ended.
Say what you want about Barry Alvarez, but UW has been a pretty consistent upper tier program in multiple sports under his watch.

2019 Football Staff Salaries in the B1G(Athletic Department revenue) percentage of athletic revenue spent on the coaching staff:
Ohio State: 21 Million (223.6M) 9.4%
Penn State: 15.8 Million (160.4M) 9.9%
Wisconsin: 9.3 Million (157.66M) 5.9%
Michigan: 16.88 Million(197.8M) 8.5%
Michigan State: 10.6 Million (140M) 7.8%
Nebraska: 9.7 Million(136.2M) 7.1%
So yes Wisconsin does in fact pay significantly less than the other big name B1G schools.

We were not gonna pay Aranda what LSU was going to. Its just not the culture
other Wisconsin guy on Jim Leonhard;

Also, he’s one of the 25 highest-paid assistants in the country, which, as you said, is needed for a DC of his caliber.
Side Note, it's awesome to see that we went this long into the thread with BA's race not even being brought up.

I mean, he’s not wrong... Wisconsin wasn’t going to match LSU, nor do I think a match would have done anything. LSU paid Dave Aranda, what, $1.3M annual before extending in 2018? After he left Madison, Jim Leonhard’s first Wisconsin contract was $1.25M total over two years He’s seen sizable increase since he started getting a lot of college and NFL attention.

Keep in mind, though, that we're not the program that is signing blank checks for the hot coordinator from other programs like many of the SEC schools do. We're getting guys who are relatively new to position coaching...so they don't deserve monster contracts.
I was lucky enough to begin my UW career at the same time as Ron Dayne (1996). Unfortunately I was not in a spot to go to those Rose Bowls, but I've been lucky enough to see us get our hearts ripped out in the last 3 appearances in Pasadena

My guess is that Wisconsin returns to its proper place as a footnote in the big ten. Barry was a once in a lifetime coach and AD. There's no way Wisconsin continues to be good in football, basketball and hockey. Now if Barry had found a way to bring back baseball that would be different.

Wisconsin expected to promote Deputy AD, Chris McIntosh, to take over for Barry Alvarez. This is a very, very good hire and one that most donors + Wisconsin fans were hoping for. Chris is a former player that grew up in Wisconsin and has been "groomed" for this position the last few years. He has an extremely impressive background with fundraising, which is something Barry was always great with, too.
