Balls and Strikes and the rectangular box on the TV screen

You think with all the technology we have with replay and getting calls right, that MLB could equip the umpires with a display seeing what we see when a ball is thrown across the plate. That way they would always call a ball a ball and a strike a strike.

It would ruin the nuance of the game. :eyeroll:
/sarcasm
They need to have a buzzer for the ump, he can only call a strike if he gets buzzed or the batter offers.
Umps still monitor outs, check swings, catches, balks, etc.

Just get rid of the frickin umpire.. if its in the box, a green light comes on
The only conceivable reason to actually have an umpire making judgement calls back there is that you want to be able to control the outcome

I’m in the minority here and take shite for it all the time, but I like the human error part of baseball. I don’t like replay and I definitely don’t want a computer calling pitches. I like when a bad call brings the skipper onto the field to kick dirt.

Why don’t we just have robots play the game?
I mean, why is human error allowed with the players themselves, but not the umpires?

The home plate umpire needs to be told what to call from New York.

No they wouldn't...they Union men, gotta show MLB they are independant who think outside the box.
A strike zone is a personality...it isn't just crossing some made up rectangle.
They are the bosses not newfangled technology.
Sarcasm aside. This isn't cyclops in tennis. Just because a pitch sneaks into a TV screen box doesn't mean it's automatically a strike...it's a little more nuanced than that.
I hate MLB umpires who think they walk on water...but being behind the plate and calling the entire game is different than a computer.
I mean, we still want the human equation in sports, right? It's played by humans. Strike zone wasn't defined by the Supreme Court or Fox sports...the strike zone isn't defined by millimeters like a sciene project...players have different bodies.
As long as the game is played by humans, it should be umped by humans.

If MLB does that, what's the point of even having umpires? Why not just let Pitchf/X or whatever technology they use call the games?

We want to see humans who can do things that most can't....play and try to win a game that we all care about.
An umpire screwing that up doesn't make the game charming or more entertaining.
Robot players?

What I would like to see is to have technology be the equivalent of chair umpires in tennis. Let humans make all of the calls while the tech can overrule them whenever a wrong call is made.

Apparently, you’re wrong, more people in this very thread agree with him. As do I.

All I want is to change how we call balls and strikes. Its completely and totally illogical that we still allow humans to do so when we have technology that can do so much more accurately and would be incredibly easy to implement without removing the need for actual human umpires to make every single other call that comes up during the games
i swear to god, 40 years from now when this change has been made, people will look back on this and be completely dumbfounded as to why we played the game this way

Settle down Nancy. I’m just some guy on a message board. It’s not like I’m on the rules committee and have an actual say in this.

According to rule 2.00 of the Major League Baseball rule book, a strike zone is defined as "that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the hollow beneath the kneecap"
Okay, put that into a computer.
Computers only tell us what we want them to say. We input the data.
They'd be calling for Dave on every pitch. Error; Error.

you make it seem like this would be difficult
the width of the plate is set, there you go. you then take measurements of every single player prior to opening day and you determine where their shoulders are and where their knees are. you enter that into the computer and now it knows what the strikezone is for every single player
wow. so difficult
