Pretty ridiculous or not?

quote:

Answer: Seven to 10 dozen balls are used in an average game, says the MLB. That means, among the 30 teams, about 1,550 balls are used in just one day, or about 247,860 in a season. The life expectancy of a baseball during a game these days: Often just two pitches, says the MLB.

Do balls that get taken out of play by the home plate umpire ever make it back into the game?

That makes good sense.

And a lot of balls are hit into the stands or given to the fans at the game by players. Probably should take that into account as well.

I would imagine the bull are fouled off, and either out of bounds or knocked up So the catcher wants a new one.

I wonder On average how many times a baseball makes contact before it’s swapped out.

I have seen pitchers and catchers quickly toss these aside...unless the ump says to remove the ball they should be trying to use them

with the uniformity I have witnessed this phenomenon, it is likely a league wide mandate to toss any scuffed ball

At $5 per baseball that's a pretty hefty price tag.

Does the MLB shoulder that cost or is it each individual team?

Is that what they cost to buy individually at retail or is that the wholesale price?

It's interesting how in baseball everyone wants a clean ball but in football, kickers and QBs beat the shite out of them to their preference before the league cut down on that practice.

A good pitcher can use that scuff to get extra break on a pitch.

I think now that they’re cracking down on tacky substances a few more scuffed balls shouldn’t be a big deal.

And then after BP balls, they end up at hitting academies or local high schools etc..
