Lebron's PER in 2005-2006 was 28.1. Kobe's PER in the same season was 28.0. That difference is far too small to say pretty clearly. Come on shel.
what about 2004-2005?

Kobe was better in 2005-2006. I watched a lot of games that year and he was better. Stats are fantastic, but you cannot have blind worship to them. They have to be held in context and used in complement to actually watching the players play.

2004-2005, the difference isn't as close as you're making it out to be

I could be wrong, but isn't that the yearlLebron averaged 31/7/7?

I'd say that's certainly up for debate.

In the 2004-05 and 05-06 seasons, Cavs had a better record than the Lakers and I think the cast around LBJ wasn't as good as the cast around Kobe. I think you have to factor in how their play affects the team. Neither team had a great roster in those years though.

Kobe passed him the following year then.

Lebron was not even top 5 in PER in 2004-2005 if that is what you are using as the measurement.

Lebron did not lead the league until 2007-2008 in PER. Kobe also had a higher PER in 2006-2007. At best, you could argue they back and forth from 2003-2007. He cannot pass Kobe for good if Kobe passed him back. Your answer should be 2007-2008.

2007-2008 is the first year that there is a decent gap in the quality of play for Lebron over Kobe if you are only looking at PER (which is pretty fricking stupid to look at just one stat, no matter how comprehensive - one true number stats are misapplied).

I actually think back in the summer of 08. When he took the Celtics to 7 games in the playoffs with a terrible Cavs team. Kobe struggled in the 6 game series they lost.

Thats just opinion though.

I think it was official when he won MVP in 09.

What year did Kobe quit on his team in the playoffs against the Suns?

And Kobe went 35/5/5.

That is what I had maintained pretty much the whole time. Like I said, you could argue 2003-2006. 2007-2008 is where a strong case for Lebron over Kobe clearly. Before then, it is more a matter of personal preference.

I thought Kobe was better up until 2006-2007 for sure IMO. If you look at that season, Kobe has a higher PER, TS%, and WS/48.

In 1997, the dunk contest year, Kobe was a rookie who played 15 min a game and avg 7 pts. That's why he was in the dunk contest. How many dunk contest have Carmelo or Durant or Wade done? Don't get the LBJ dunk contest thing.
