As the pinnacle of motorsport, could F1 at some point go to autonomous racecars?

As technology advances, will there be a day when a human driver can be removed from the car?

If they completely opened the formula humans could not drive the cars, especially the deceleration Gs would make it near impossible to not black out. That said I don't think taking the drivers out of the cars would be commercially viable now or any time soon. When the day comes that people no longer drive cars/planes etc it will likely happen but that is likely a couple of generations away.

Then it would just be a video game.

Isn't part of the attraction of motor sports is that death is on the line?

All major series have been working to eliminate that danger.

I am. I don’t see why this is such a weird question. F1 only cares about advancement.

Nah. I think the future of motorsports will eventually be with electric motors like Formula E.

Don't follow the sport, but I thought people were fans of the drivers themselves. Not the cars

Rather than autonomy, I think its more likely to evolve to a form of egaming, with the cars remotely piloted by nerds

Some are, but most are fans of a particular manufacturer.

There will be an automated car race, but it won't start in F1.

Friends wife is a flight attendant and she said that the pilots hardly fly planes as it is. They essentially do just about everything on their own, including landing.

quote:

Question: Can large commercial airliners be landed with only computers and no pilot intervention? -- submitted by reader Raymond, Charlotte, N.C. Answer: Many modern airplanes can autoland. These new generation jets can fly the approach, flare, touch down, track the centerline of the runway, apply brakes and deploy the ground spoilers. They cannot apply thrust reverse and cannot turn off the runway. It requires significant pilot input to set up the autoflight systems for the approach, and to arm the proper modes of the systems. I would not say there is no pilot intervention, but it is accurate to say the pilots are not manually flying.

there was actually a plane crash years ago where the autopilot disengaged and the pilots didn't know how to fly the plane and read the gauges and it stalled out and crashed in the ocean. So now they require pilots to learn to fly at height and speed if autopilot fails.

Your friends wife doesn't know what she is talking about. Probably why she is a stewardess.

They are already promoting gaming competitors alongside F1 drivers.

I get bored when real life drivers don't have personality, so I can't imagine how bored I would be with no drivers at all.
