ESPN

quote:

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Longtime Arizona Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill died Wednesday while surrounded by his family and loved ones, the team announced. He was 88.

Bill Bidwill's father, Charles, bought the Chicago Cardinals in 1932 and Bill was associated with the team for eight decades. He started as a ball boy as a child and went to work for the team full time in 1960 -- the Cardinals' first season in St. Louis -- after a stint in the Navy. He became owner in 1972; the team moved to Arizona in 1988.

Bidwill gave up day-to-day operations to Michael in 2007, when Michael became the team president.

Under Bidwill's ownership, the Cardinals toiled in mediocrity. They had five winning seasons from 1972 until Ken Whisenhunt was hired as head coach in 2007, Michael's first year in charge. The Cardinals went to their first and only Super Bowl the next season.

gotta love this paragraph though

quote:

Despite a lack of success on the field, Bidwill was ahead of the curve with diversity in the NFL. He hired the first black female executive in league history, Adele Harris; the NFL's first black contract negotiator, Bob Wallace; and the league's first black head coach-general manager tandem, Dennis Green and Rod Graves.

He tried to stay in St.Louis and build a new stadium near the old Vess Soda factory(his $ for stadium), and only asked for some land that was sitting vacant, but the Mayor at the time was a super libtard, and told him he won't give him the land, and would sell it at a huge markup to him, and if he didn't like it, move. And so Bidwell moved, and people literally wanted to kill the Mayor later, when all of the facts came out.

His son is the only reason they improved and became a SB contender, the old man was a terrible judge of talent, especially in front office. Bill hired old Cardinals who didn't have a lick of NFL sense. Stories i heard from some former players who still live here are amazing at how inept he was at hiring management peeps and the decisions they would make.

The Bidwell's have owned that franchise for a long, long time. Took them out of Chicago (actually Papa Bear ran them out).

The Bidwells make the Ford family look like competent NFL owners.

Terrible owner, but unlike the Beverly Hillbilly, he wasn’t soulless.

In hindsight, the STL city and county screwed up big time.

It's almost like these two things could potentially have some type of correlation.

Vince Schoemel. Probably the worst mayor in our history and that’s saying a bunch.

Good job, Cardinals. Your abysmal play the last 3 years has killed your owner.

Well done.

Michael wasn’t anywhere near as awful of an owner his father was. I was really hoping they would have hung on in that Super Bowl against the Steelers.

It’s bad enough that you bring politics into this forum but that you get the story wrong.

I was only rooting for Warner to win. Guy easily could've been 3-0 if the last two defenses didn't go into a fetal position.
