damn, espn 3 just went out on me. Looks like the game may be over soon but I'd still like to watch it.

It seemed he started his slide very late to intentionally take out the baseman.

So maybe the ump deemed it an illegal slide who knows.

Go back and watch the replay. He slid straight over the bag. It is the second baseman's job to get out of the way

He slid late, at the bag, in order to get contact. The rule says the runner must slide on the ground "before the base" for it to be legal. Most umps in college will interpret that type of slide as a slide at the base not before it, looking to disrupt the fielder.

The reason I think it was legal was because the SS was right on top of the bag when hit

That is what it look like to me, very late slide to take out the fielder by a runner who was already out.

Heh, they had to split the ESPN3 stream due to length. They're now on part 2.

College rules are very different from pro ball in these instances. They're extremely protective of players. Any touching of the fielder or attempt to impede the throw is an automatic DP. The same applies to plays at home. If a runner barrel into the catcher, they can immediately call him out.

For you two saying you cant make contact, please look at section B under the diagram

Yea, I didn't think that was correct about not making contact.

I'm not sure what more we could hand them. The rule clearly states contact is legal as long as he doesnt slide to the left or right of the base.

Kendall Rodgers just tweeted that it was a bad call

Further proof it was correct.

c. Actions by a runner are illegal and interference shall be called if:
(1) The runner slides or runs out of the base line in the direction of the fielder
and alters the play of a fielder (with or without contact);
(2) The runner uses a rolling or cross-body slide and either makes contact with
or alters the play of a fielder;
(3) The runner’s raised leg makes contact higher than the fielder’s knee when
in a standing position;
(4) The runner slashes or kicks the fielder with either leg; or
(5) The runner illegally slides toward or contacts the fielder even if the fielder
makes no attempt to throw to complete a play.
PENALTY for 1-5—(1) With less than two outs, the batter-runner, as well
as the interfering runner, shall be declared out and no other
runner(s) shall advance.

you can call people stupid if it makes you feel better

If you take a guy out like that its going to get called.

too bad so sad.

you just can't annihilate a guy like that these days.
