Yeah I would be interested to know the story behind the author releasing it on the podcast. The timing is awfully coincidental if he was just like “yeah I’ll go on and drop this nugget”.
And I’m not saying that to defend Phil at all. If you’re getting in bed financially with people like that you need to know you can’t say shite like that.
Yeah that wouldn’t surprise me at all

I wonder if the PGA knew of the quotes (Phil claiming to be bluffing) and they wanted it released to the public to blow up the chances of the Saudi Tour happening.

My understanding (from hearing the journalist talk about it) was that the interview took place a while back. The book will be released in a couple of months, but they decided to release a few quotes, which helps drum up interest in the book.
Ahh got ya. That makes sense. Weird that he would say that in the book.
I guess it got leaked and he saw the backlash. It sounds like some people are saying the backlash is coming from the saudi side.
I thought it was just that he sounds like a piece of shite by saying they are horrible people but money over all.

I don’t think anyone outside of the golf world cares. But the golf guys are upset because they think Phil tried to hurt the PGA, Phil claims he’s trying to make it better for the players by pushing for change. The sponsors are pulling away from Phil because they all have a good relationship with the PGA and don’t want to upset the Tour.

One of his issues is that he doesn't think as much is going to charity as there should be, based on the value of the tour's on-book assets. They own many many billions of dollars of IP and barely distribute $200M each year.
This may be part of it.
I saw an interview a week or so ago on the golf channel. Phil was making the point pga tour players get less than 25% of revenue compared to 50-60% for other professional sports. He blames the commissioner and tried to get the Saudi golf league going to the tune of distributing $100 million to players.
Him or his team wrote the Saudi league agreement.
Rory mcilroy blasted Phil yesterday. Others piled on, not well liked on tour.
He’s putting himself in time out to rehabilitate himself.

But he has been making this deal, no?

Hasn't phil been doing this deal with the saudi people?
I thought the backlash started with the comments being leaked.

Allegedly both he and Dustin Johnson has lawyers helping to set up the contracts for the Saudi Tour.
And Rory, as much as I like him, has completely sold out to “Hollywood”. He’s more worried about his image and being a celebrity than winning at golf. Hard to blame him, he was halfway to being a billionaire by time he turned 30 years old. Rory has played both sides of the fence. He looked like the tough guy this week condemning the Saudi Tour. But what took so long for him to speak out against it?

He basically said the Saudis are horrible people with awful human rights abuses, but he wants to partner with them because it would be good for golf. I like Phil, he's survived some scandals before, but I'm not sure he'll get past this one.
Kind of. He says he hired attorneys to draw up their operating agreement just to pressure the PGA to pay players more.

Basically the PGA's minions are trying to blow this deal up.
Minions as in every golfer worth a shite on tour? The Saudi league is dead unless they want C list tour pros, and they won’t turn a profit with that level of player

I am guessing some of the players who were considering it didn’t appreciate Phil painting a PR narrative with his Khashoggi comments also. Guys like DJ are going to be hyper aware about their image and once Phil makes a comment like that it points a big finger at the Saudi human rights record and everything.
Jason Kokrak was pretty much like “I just want to make money” which was pretty funny, but nobody is going to care what he says

I bet Phil forgot he gave the interview.

I have always rooted for Phil. He has never been ranked number one in the world due to Tiger. I think Phil was once worth about 400 million ? I don’t think he really needs the money but I’m sure there is an ego that fuels his competitiveness.

But they are horrible and he’s not talking about the general population but cancel culture isn’t interested in defending them, just the elites.

I think there’s 2 things happening here:
1. Phil wants the PGA tour to give video rights to the players
2. He’s trying to make some money potentially with the Saudis
He got caught playing both sides of the fence, hoping the PGA tour caved if a bunch of folks were going to jump to the Saudi tour, while also being integrally involved in the Saudi league IF a bunch of players jumped and PGA tour didn’t cave

I doubt ole Phil really gives a frick if he is canceled or not. He will just go down to the Country Club and gamble $1000 a hole
That, and he has a seat waiting beside Jim Nantz on CBS golf coverage once he retires and pushes Faldo out the door.
