Oft-injured Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is having hip surgery and is expected to miss a significant amount of time, general manager Perry Minasian said Wednesday.

quote:

After signing a seven-year, $245 million contract and debuting with the Angels during the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 season, Rendon, 34, has not played more than 58 games in any season. He had a 1.010 OPS with 34 home runs and a major-league-leading 126 RBIs in 2019, but his OPS over five years with the Angels is just .717.

quote:

He has played in only 205 games and missed 438 since the start of the 2021 season.

Rendon had three stints on the injured list with hamstring, back and oblique issues in 2024, finishing the season with a .218 batting average with no home runs and 14 RBIs in 206 at-bats.

Is there another big 4 franchise that has spent as much money with as little to show for it?

While true, that was their first pennant since 2009. How much money have they spent and how many superstars have the signed over the 15 years in between? I mean honestly, it's pretty wild they only have one world series title since 2000 with their payroll

And? Did they get a participation trophy?

Nothing screams, “I don’t care” more than scheduling an off-season surgery at the start of Spring Training.

I remember him getting hurt at LSU going after a fly ball in the in-play visitor’s bullpen.

He's been hurt so much I still thought he was with the Nationals.

That's fine. Settle and move on. Or he can spend the net 50 years fighting.

Is baseball the poster child for why guaranteed contracts are bad in sports?
