Just to get this out of the way, I'm not advocating for players having free mobility after signing contracts

I'm simply saying "AD shouldnt have signed that extension if he didnt want to play for NOLA" is very intellectually dishonest

He could have signed the qualifying offer and became a free agent the following season. Really see that becoming more of a thing in the future.

He had the ability to sign an offer sheet for a shorter term or less money for more mobility in the future

I’m all for players using their leverage, but I’m not going to have a pity party whenever you don’t have as much as you think because you traded it in for the big payday

And then risk having a boogie type injury and never getting a major pay day?

Point is once you take that extension, you take what comes with it. Which is a more difficult path to free agency/desired destinations

He had other options than signing the max for 5 years

Fact is that AD wanted this season to go to shite from the get-go because the plan all along was to have a shitty team and make it look like the Pelicans weren't a contender. He never wanted to have success this year and fricking knows it. It's easier to request a trade from a bad team.

I mean any time a player steps on a court "it's a risk". Players don't think that way. They bet on themselves constantly.

Porzingis is possibly going to do it now and he's coming off an ACL tear.

Players, more so than ever, want to control their futures, as early as possible. It may not be the best decision for everyone but I can see it happening more often.

You want security or do you want immediate control of your future? It’s his choice. Can’t have both.

This butthurt over AD is pitiful. Pelicans had every opportunity to build something around that kid, and didn't. He deserves to go where he wants. Your anger should be directed towards the Pels office.

Like I said, I agree. I just dont like the "well he shiukdnt have signed that deal" because it's a very shallow argument devoid of any nuance. Of course he took that deal, he was given life changing guaranteed money and realistically had no other comparable options

I absolutely agree that he should stick to his agreement though

If you want flexibility it comes with risks. Couldn’t he have tried to get a 3 year deal with an option on his rookie extension also?

Or are they locked into 4 guaranteed years

The team locks them in for 4 guarantees years. It's a two year team option after year two

It has never been made more clear that AD is a follower, not a leader. As soon as LeBron had a chance he got his boy to become his agent, telling him he'd make more money, then immediately got in his ear about how he should raise his kid on the west coast instead of New Orleans. Everybody fricking knows it. He didn't act like this before Rich Paul got in his ear. frick all of them.

they would fault leaving a contender.

Pelicans bought his NBA freedom away from him. That’s the trade off. That’s just life

It’s like Dewey Cox getting double married. It can’t be done. You have to choose

Hell he can just look at Lebron, who has left a bunch of money on the table to stick to short term deals so he’s never stuck in a bad situation again. And if AD did have that Boogie injury, Lebron would boogie his way out of LA in a second
