you don't think that some people with malicious intent will be able to persuade a WR who isn't projected to have a productive NFL career to drop a couple easy passes in a nat'l title game for $1M (whether it's cash/bitcoin), and thereby significantly affecting a game? or a kicker to miss any potential game winning FGs?

And don’t forget, a lot of these players are paid by gambling businesses and the companies that partner with them. NIL is a cancer.

Good. Iowa and Iowa State should get the death penalty for lack of institutional control.

Did the Iowa player bet the under?

If so,

Smart bet

All kidding aside, Michael Franzese has predicted this. Also said all this gambling is like a jobs program for traditional bookies.

besides the fact that this is illegal, it hurts because as sports fans, most of us have the belief that sports are free from internal corruption/tampering/influence. at the very least, we didn't have much hard evidence that it existed before this (besides the tim donghagy NBA scandal). yeah, we always b*tch that refs are paid off or certain games are rigged, but I don't know if anyone SERIOUSLY believed that

but the potential for this thing to go completely haywire is insane, and it could lead to absolutely devastating consequences

This goes on alot more than you think. Tim Donaghy situation was just putting it to light. Plenty of games are rigged in college by players knowing they want a payday and can't make the big leagues. You are very naive.

Lower level tennis players that don’t make any money have been getting busted left and right recently for throwing matches for the mob

It’s coming for football as well

It's been here. In 2005 a toledo football game was taken off the books because the outcome was rigged.

But how is this worse than Phil betting on himself? He will never survive this.

All of them are doing it from college to pro. It’s just a matter of getting caught

Hasn't ESPN and other outlets been advertising gambling for years now? This can't be a surprise to anyone.

I really feel for folks like you, I really do.

I accepted many years ago what sports is, who controls it, and how it operates. If you don't think games are fixed by this point, then you are looking at this like a religion.

This is just the tip of the iceberg if the entire truth were ever revealed.

I've said it a million times: I don't blame players for betting on games at all. When it is obvious your sport is rigged, you may as well profit off of it too.

Yep, and in the best conference in football, you can bet your arse it happens a lot. It is blatantly obvious in the SEC officials have been tilting games for decades. You don't think players get in on it too?

I'm still convinced a specific player (that I openly supported) purposely blew a huge game not too long ago. I'll leave it at that. One play in particular made it more than obvious. I'll just leave it at that because the true believers here already think I'm nuts, and I'm fine with that.

I bet this kind of thing has been going on in states where sports gambling is legal for a while now. The state of Iowa decided to investigate and that is why it is happening in Iowa. If any other state wanted to look into their players' actions, then I bet we would see similar outcomes. These players will fall on the sword for sure and you have to hope that is the lesson that other players will see to not do the same thing going forward.

I’m an idiot for thinking a bookie won’t get to a WR in the national title game and offer him a million dollars to drop some passes?

THAT scenario seems plausible to you clowns?

Add this to the pile of things that make me sick in the pay for play debates of the near past. “These kids can barely afford to eat”, blah blah blah. These “kids” have tattoos I can’t afford, cell phones better than mine, and drive cars better than mine. Now, they have enough disposable income to make wagers online?

Miss me with the poor student athlete angle, every time

I think any smart bookie or mobster would stay away from a high profile game like the national title. Go to some MAC game that nobody is paying attention to.

yes. you are an idiot for thinking that. considering something similar has already happened in baseball before

quote:

The Black Sox Scandal was a Major League Baseball game-fixing scandal in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for money from a gambling syndicate led by Arnold Rothstein.
