I hate to say it but The ONLY way to make players competitive in the ASG is the winner gets home court in the Finals like baseball used to have. All Star players would be heavy in the top 4 seeds in each conference.

My spin on dunk contest is contestants start with a dunk at 9’0 goal then move 6 inches higher each round with a accumulated score, once the goal is to high to reach, you are eliminated.

I stopped watching the NBA Dunk contest after this:

Vince Carter puts on a show in legendary 2000 Slam Dunk Contest

ETA:

I just went down Vince Carter rabbit hole. If you don't know, just YouTube it. He was the epitome of the jumping out of the building phrase.

Stephen A had a nice rant today how LeBron has killed it by not participating. So other guys don’t join.

The Dunk Contest was a display for younger non-All Stars or new All Stars since at least Vince Carter (where he had his coming out party at the dunk contest). Lebron was in high school when this happened. He also didn't need a coming out party.

Lebron also isn't a great contest dunker. See: his high school contest.

That and guys just getting too good at it. It's kind of like defense from the 80s and 90s, where nostalgia doesn't hold up to review.

You don't have to go back to the 80s, either. Just look at Kobe's east bay that won. Would be very mid grade today.

Also, to have a really good contest you need 2 guys going at it. One historic dunker beating less elite guys isn't entertaining even if the dunks are elite from the champion

Fans have tuned out this woke event:

NBA All-Star Game ratings, viewership *easily* the lowest ever.

Plus:
-- All-Star Saturday Night and Rising Stars also down to new lows

Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game averaged a combined 2.2 rating and 4.59 million viewers across TNT and TBS, making it easily the lowest rated and least-watched edition of the game. The previous lows were a 3.1 (2021 and 2022) and around six million viewers (2021).

Ratings declined 29% and viewership 27% from last year’s All-Star Game (3.1, 6.28M). While All-Star Game viewership has been trending down, this year’s declines are the steepest for the game since 2000 — the first All-Star Game after a one-year hiatus due to the 1998-99 NBA lockout.
