It's not a "hot take."
Where did he grow up? No idea?
Did he play football ever in his life? No idea?
His coaching career was completely glossed over. What led him to become a coach? Who did they beat in the Superbowl? What was the season like leading up to it? What was the final score? Why did he retire?
There was almost nothing at all in the documentary about his 30 year professional relationship with Pat Sumerall. How did he feel when Sumerall retired? Was it difficult adjusting to a new broadcast partner after so many years with Sumerall?
You kind of got the idea that he left CBS for Fox because of the $$$$. What about ABC? Leaving ABC for NBC? None of that is in there.
There's also quite literally no footage from his final broadcast nor is there any commentary as to why he decided to call it quits. Just a line that said he "retired after the 2008 NFL season."
Regarding the video game franchise, that's a whole other story, but how did Madden get involved? What level of involvement did Madden have especially during the game's early days. None of that is in there.
As a series of NFL greats giving touching stories about Madden, it's great, but it's just not a documentary because it doesn't actually document anything.
Agree with all this.

As a eulogy for the man, it's fantastic
Why do you think they aired it a few days before he died?

I’m not doubting they knew he was in his last years (months?) when they made it.
But it is a bit hard to believe they intentionally timed it up that perfectly when they initially scheduled it.
LINK
This link is from early November and it already notes that it was scheduled for Christmas Day.

The 2007 game with Michael Vick on cover on gamecube was my life for 2 years.
Vick was on '04, and was a cheat code only eclipsed by Bo Jackson on Techmo Super Bowl.

The NFL network ran the Raider's Super Bowl run "America's Game" episode, and it was fantastic. Look for it online or on the network.

Are you talking about Christmas day special?

It covered all this and showed a picture of em in his HS FB uniform
And also talked about his childhood friendship with John Robinson

In Fox’s defense (they produced this doc) Madden only left CBS because they didn’t take Fox’s bid seriously and then lost the NFC. Madden and other top CBS people joined Fox kind of by default to keep some of the CBS traditions going plus the network gained a lot of former CBS affiliates in NFC markets between the bid and the kickoff of the 1994 season. He left Fox because Summerall retired and ABC enticed him with money for Monday Night Football. He then jumped to NBC because ABC lost the rights to MNF and essentially NBC’s Sunday Night Football is what used to be ABC’s Monday Night Football.

Maybe he was just a super nice guy with a cool bus

Most of what you said is true. But Summerall actually didn't retire yet. He would stay with FOX the year after Madden left FOX to go to ABC. Summerall was paired with Brian Baldinger (is he still with NFL Network) for the 2002 season. He would then temporarily retire after that only calling select college bowl games a few years later on FOX. I vividly remember he and Baldinger on the 2008 Cotton Bowl.

Here’s how he would describe his life, “well, here’s a guy who was born, did a bunch of stuff and then, (he would make some sounds), he died”

It covered and answered just about everything you are whining about. California, went to Poly, best friends with John Robinson. He met the actual developer of the game that would become madden- the guy was in the doc talking about how they met and how JM demanded 11 players on the screen for the game. I would love for them to have gone into a little more about him, but then it would have become a six hour documentary.

Vick was on the cover of the 2004 game. I used to play it non stop.
Don’t remember the 04 game but remember vividly the 05 Ray Lewis one, with the mini games for training camp and the badarse soundtrack

I liked the training camp drills that improved your player's rating. And the 3 on 3 drill. And the challenges for the packs of cards to unlock more content. Is that still in the game now?
