The “fourth-and-15” alternative to the onside kick appears to have a good chance of passing at this week’s owners’ meeting.

This is fricking ridiculous. You know how easy it is to gain 15 yards in the NFL?

Why not stop all the pretense and slowly changing the game by rule every year since 2004...and just do this:

Make it a fraternity style - all offense flag league.

Aaron Rodgers will play all-time QB for both teams, and it comes down to each teams receivers...who is better...that's how we'll decide the games.

Unless you deliberately underthow a long pass and get a cheap-arse pass interference. And let’s face it, getting one of those should entitle you to an extra possession, right?

Didn't the success rate drop because of rule changes? I think that's what he was saying -- go back to pre 2018 or whenever.

If you are down 2 with a minute to go it's a gift.

This is a stupid rule. Bastardizing the game.

It was around 23% success rate of the season prior to the rule change last year but stay around 15% over the last decade

Statistically it's harder to get a 4th and 15 than the old onside kick.

Gonna go ahead and guess that whatever stat you’re quoting is wildly misleading

You can only go for it in certain situations.

That only makes it worse. Onside kicks can happen at any time currently. If you limit the scope of a replacement onside kick with this rule then you’re basically rewarding a team with an extra possession because they are losing. Why should you be rewarded for that?

The location on the field changes the success rates of 4th and 15 conversions. The more field to work with, the better chances the offense has and vice versa

That is an absolutely retarded rule. There is no logical consistency with it whatsoever.

as of 2014, 4th and 15 had a 15% conv rate outside the 20 yard line.

Another thing is if theres only like 3 seconds left on the clock when the losing team scores, they get a free chance at a hail mary because reasons?

There are too many automatic 1st down penalties against the defense that simply running a play at all increases the odds of a conversion compared to an onside kick play. Let's start there first and then we'll talk. I dont want to see teams retain possession because of a 5 yard holding penalty or because someone grazed the QB's helmet

No automatic first downs except for personal fouls. Other defensive penalties only repeat the down.

yes that is because they changed the rules so you cant overload one side.

the stupidity of adding more stupidity to the game, to compensate for a rule change you put in, for the expressed point of making onside kicks near impossible to do, and therefore causing them not to be attempted anymore, only now to try and entice a way teams will attempt them again, is mind blowing level of stupidity only found in the NFL front office

How about this for a new rule to allow teams a chance to keep the ball after scoring:

Anytime after a score, a team can choose to receive a kickoff instead of kicking it off. The opposing team must land the ball in the field of play. If the returning team returns the ball past the 50 yard line, they keep the ball. If the return team doesn’t make it past the 50 yard line, the kicking team takes over where the returner went down.

Teams can choose this option anytime.
