All but one member of the NFLs competition committee voted for the 4th and 15 proposal

This seems like a wildly easy conversion for such a game changing play
Owners still have to vote it in however

The “fourth-and-15” alternative to the onside kick appears to have a good chance of passing at this week’s owners’ meeting.
That’s because Giants owner John Mara told reporters that he is the only member of the competition committee opposed to the proposal, which would allow teams to choose not to kick off after a fourth-quarter score and instead attempt one offensive play from their own 35-yard line. If that play goes for 15 yards, the team keeps the ball. Other than Mara, the rest of the competition committee is in favor of the idea.

Sounds like a stupid idea

4th and 15 are pretty damn difficult in the NFL

There’s a gulf in between the difficulty of getting 15 yards in today’s NFL and getting an onside kick.
I’m all for making it a more obtainable since they’ve made the onside kick impossible, but handing them an extra possession for free doesn’t really make sense.

What a dumb rule. Why not go back to normal onside rules?
I guess it's alot easier for the ref to decide the game with the 4th and 15.

Yeah, turning the sport into make it take it seems rinky dink.

There are too many automatic 1st down penalties against the defense that simply running a play at all increases the odds of a conversion compared to an onside kick play. Let's start there first and then we'll talk. I dont want to see teams retain possession because of a 5 yard holding penalty or because someone grazed the QB's helmet

You can only go for it in certain situations.
And if you don't get it, the opponent gets it in plus territory.

I don’t like it but they could also make all defensive penalties in this scenario simply be a replay of down and not an automatic conversion to help that part. But I really really don’t like it. Changes the dynamic of the game to me.

I don't give a shite about fair/unfair, especially since I don't have a team to root for. I watch to be entertained, and this would make it slightly more entertaining.

That’s an incredibly low bar to set for making rule changes

Not really. Considering the most important rule change that made football entertaining was the forward pass. All of a sudden rugby was a forgotten game in America.

How about they fix OT first?

Any time someone is breaking open, haul them down.

How many catastrophic injuries have actually occurred on kickoffs/onside kicks?
That's how we should measure the level of danger.

Statistically it's harder to get a 4th and 15 than the old onside kick.

As a fan of a team that historically gets a lot of PI calls against them (Saints), I would hate this rule in a critical moment of the game
