Baseball is a game of ..not of inches but...1/8th and 1/4th inches, especially in the playoffs. Its not regular season feasting on the 18 games against the Marlins ...Pirates etc. Its the playoffs, when it is cooler but every team has a staff that won 90+ games. Staffs that won 90+ because when they missed their spot...they tend to miss by a lot less..thus giving up warning tract vs 2

Climate change has ruined baseball for future generations. Entire pitching staffs are collapsing...

Have the Cards made a deal with the actual Devil? One of the biggest advantages the Braves had was power entering the series and it was basically negated by MLB.

The evidence seems rather anecdotal

Playoffs = better pitchers

Also the cooler weather probably leads to denser air causing greater resistance

Do the numbers cited only include the playoff ballparks? It'd be pretty shitty to compare Coors Field seasonal stats against playoff venues

How do the playoff pitchers reg season homer total compare to what they gave up in the series? A 2 game sample size is problematic though

Again it has nothing to do with pitchers.

Balls that were home runs in the reg season are now fly balls.

Not sure what's so hard here...

These metrics are on hit balls. Based on exit velocity + launch angle + ballpark variable

Correct. A ball hit and n the regular season with a certain launch angle and velocity was a HR. A ball hit with the same variables in the playoffs doesn't fly out the park. What has changed? The balls have changed.

The regular season ended less than two weeks ago and several playoff games have been played in controlled (domed) environments. Playing conditions have not changed that much.

I'm of the opinion, as a neutral observer (Cubs fan) the balls have changed.

I think we've established in this thread that air resistance doesn't exist in a dome.

Admittedly I missed it but I am still quite skeptical.

way too many variables and I'd think that if MLB changed the composition of the ball, someone would have leaked it by now.

A simple dissection of the ball would reveal any material changes.

Joe Girardi thinks that’s Will Harris because he thinks Will Harris is Will Smith.

think that had more to do with it simply being Dodger stadium at night killing balls like it usually does. You have to really nail a ball, like kendricks grand slam, to get it out of DS once the marine layer sets

a lot of people in this thread are misinterpreting this graph

this is measuring reduction of speed on fastballs, from when it leaves the pitcher's hand till it crosses home plate. Air resistance is up by a factor of 3. This hasn't happened in the playoffs in the past, and it's warmer this playoffs than it has been in years past

Intentional or not, the ball is different. In AAA (where they supposedly used the same balls as MLB all year) home run rates plummeted in August this year.

MLB manufactures the baseballs, Manfred should be fired. Not arguing that the ball cost the Braves the series, but Manfred has been a terrible commish his entire term

Dude calm down. They play games indoors where it’s essentially a vacuum.

Try to keep up...

But for real, this is truly absurd.
