First of all, it doesn’t take much to get popular and/or famous in this country. The “hawk tuah” girl is more than enough proof of that.

Second, I think that (in addition to being a great player) she stands out because she’s not what you expect given her success. You expect a 6’2” black girl with tats or a 6’5” Amazonian. You don’t expect an everyday white girl. And while she isn’t a beauty queen like Livvy Dunne, she is cute and that always helps your exposure when you’re female.

Non-whites have benefited as well. Tiger Woods being mixed race with a catchy nickname did more for his hype in his early days than if he were just another white golfer named John Smith.

He was different.

In sports, you have to be the real deal. Pro sports are perhaps the closest thing we have to a meritocracy. There is a fair scoreboard and you have to win. You don’t become a sports star by accident or dumb luck. But it does help your exposure to naturally stand out in some way.

Last night I cried after rewatching Caitlin’s 41 pt triple double in the elite 8.

I was thinking how she is so good she could probably doing this in the pros, and building the women’s game to elite levels, but her coach is so woke and hard headed it will never happen.
