So he bet on a football game… no problem with me… I just hope they do the right thing and put him on the HOF before he dies.

Especially since he bet on baseball as a manager and is HOF worthy as a player.

Exactly…. He should be in as a player.

Considering no one will ever touch his all time hits number I think he deserves it

He's annoying but should be in the Hall of Fame.

i have always said, the ultimate slap in the face is to let him in after he passes.
Looking forward to watching, always loved Charlie Hustle.

That this guy is not in the HOF is prolly a top 10 disgrace in the annals of human error…
Posted on 7/25/24 at 8:30 am to nicholastiger
I feel like they'll eventually put him in the Hall after he's dead.

What was a disgrace was not just him betting on baseball as a manager, but then lying to all of us for years, and not just lying, acting like we were all idiots for not believing him and that he was "wronged", only to come out years later with the truth. I personally think THAT is what is keeping him out. Had he just admitted it up front, owned it, with remorse and humbled, I think he is probably in now.

He could have made this go away with a one-year suspension if he'd copped to it at the start. That's in the records that were obtained by Joe Posnaski, the baseball writer, for his chapter on Rose in his book on the 100 greatest baseball players.
But he didn't, because thinking like the dunderheaded jock he is, he thought he could hustle hard enough like he was going first to third on a single and slide in head first and beat the rap.
And a while later, three of his former teammates ... Mike Schmidt, Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench ... were dispatched to go see him and tell him that for there to be any chance whatsoever of him being readmitted to baseball, he had to stop gambling, period, for the rest of his life on this planet. He told them to get F'd because the reality is the guy is a degenerate gambler who at this point loves it more than he loves baseball ... Las Vegas is the perfect home base for him.
A new biography of him also came out this year that presents pretty compelling evidence that he was running around with a rough crowd on the gambling front and betting on baseball, including his own team, as early as the 1970s.
And he thought he could get away with it and pretty much get away with anything that struck his fancy to do because by God he hustled and "played the game the way it was supposed to be played," and fans ate that stuff up and were willing to give him a pass just like they do to this day.
The reality is that aside from the gambling, the 15-year-old he was doing ... and it's irrelevant that she looked older ... will keep him out of the Hall of Fame forever, alive or dead, regardless of how many fans yap on internet message boards.
There's a reason his children won't have anything to do with him as he lives alone in Las Vegas making a living signing silly crap on baseballs (according to the recent biography, he got in serious financial trouble when that dried up during COVID and he still kept gambling), although his first wife Karolyn who for some still reason still says she loves him plans to be there when he dies and has begged the kids to come as well so he won't die alone.
There's a reason Johnny Bench has hated the man's guts for 50 years, and it's not jealousy.

Not a great human being but should be in the Hall

I once talked with someone that was in the Reds organization back in that era. He said that after Pete had been in the majors a while, he got to know a lot of people and made a lot of friends. On the road he would often stay with his friends, eat with them, visit them and their families, rather than be at the team hotel. That would allow him to pocket the per diem and use it for whatever without dipping into salary money etc.

That’s incorrect. I took the bengals in that Super Bowl.

Doesn't matter, even active MLB players are allowed to gamble on other sports.

This is how I feel. Of course he should be in, but he’s such an ornery and incredibly unlikeable a-hole, that I don’t have the energy/give a frick to make his case. I’m sure the people that actually may have sway feel the same way.
And he’s overrated as a player, too. He hit a bunch of singles in like a 25-year career. Enough to be a HOFer for sure, but not enough for me to care to make his case even if he had never been caught gambling.
Really tough SOB and played the game hard as shite, so respect for that. But I just can’t make myself care about him being in the Hall or not.

Meh. Done with Pete Rose story. Is there any debate who has the most hits in MLB history? Will being in the hall give him his 4,257th hit, 4th ring, or another MVP? His plaque up in a museum outside of Syracuse won’t make him a better player

I really want to like him because I respected the way he played the game, but what a scum bag he is/was.
