Yeah, the decision by the Mariners not to promote Randy Johnson to the majors until he was 27 is one of the most bizarre personnel decisions in MLB history

He came up with the Expos, and was pitching in the majors at age 24

Longevity matters, and he was able to have a nice post-peak career (cue the "mere compiler" argument which I loathe).

Agree 110%. Low 3ish ERA from age 37-46 isn't compiling. He may not have been the best pitcher on a given team, but he certainly wasn't holding them back. He was effective.

I am not saying he had the greatest career, but 1999 Pedro Martinez is the greatest pitcher ever.

I think you mean 2000 Pedro.

And its really splitting hairs between pedros best season and maddux'

No, he's not close Baloo laid out some valuable stats. I don't have time to compile a formal list but off the top of my head: Walter Johnson, Greg Maddux, Christy Mathewson, Kofax, Pedro, Clemens, Gibson probably

I dont know man, i think Nolan Ryan belongs in that mix if we're talking careers, but i wont blame anyone for disagreeing. Its an interesting topic.

He got a cup of coffee with Expos, but pitched 26 innings. That's not even enough to lose rookie status. he was then traded to the Mariners, who didn't make him a full time starter until his age 26 season.

Just bizarre as hell. At age 22, he had a minor league ERA of 3.16 and a K/9 of 10.0. And they were having him repeat A ball.

He is extremly popular in part because he did pitch and pitch well into his 40's. He's a likable guy, I just don't think he is one of the 10 best pitchers ever. Top 25 is still freaking awesome, but he is the most over rated because of his popularity, K's and no hitters.

Precisely. Jim Palmer was a better pitcher, but he was a bit of dickhead so no one really likes him that much. If we're talking about who would I rather watch or hang out with? Ryan. Who would I rather have on my team? Palmer. He's better. Even though he makes you want to punch him in the face. Ryan delivers the punches.

Well both really, but I did mean 1999. I think 99 was more dominant, only reason for a slightly higher ERA was a hundred point higher BABIP.

I don't see any pertinent 23-year anniversary's for Pedro Martinez.

Seattle made him a full time starter immediately

he was traded after making 6 starts for montreal in 1989, he then made 22 starts for Seattle at age 25

I dunno, I mean. he was really wild for a while

Interesting Bleacher Report Article on the Top 50 Pitchers.

Though I think it's kind of full of shite considering it takes only raw stats into account which is why the top 3 pitchers they list all played in the early 1900s.

You have to give Ryan a lot of credit for having such a long and successful career. However, he is the most overrated pitcher by a landslide (for some people). A lot have realized he is an all time great, but nowhere near the level of Walter Johnson, Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson.

Agreed. I accidentally hit thumbs down for your post.
That's what I get for trying to use that function.
