I'm one of those 90s kids all grown up now with a young son of my own. Are there any "cheap" cards left nowadays? Cheapest I've seen is a Topps pack I found at Target for around $4. The $5k cards are awesome, but my kid just wants to handle them, sort them, absorb them and repeat over and over. Looking for a good brand to let him do just that with if any still exist.

Skenes is legit the perfect example to learn from.

Or just take a look at the top rookies from 10 years ago, or 15 years ago, just pick a random year from the early 2010s. Chances are their cards are pretty worthless today. Unless your guy becomes a top 5 all time players, none of these cards have long term staying power. In 20 years, no one is going to be looking for the hot rookie cards from 2026.

Well that's why I also mentioned Kershaw as a comp. But Skenes especially since it was just a year ago he was on fire like the Miz and was the next can't miss guaranteed to be all time great pitcher with high velocity. And here we are a year later and he's getting beat up a little bit. Still really good, just doesn't look all time good and his card prices have fallen.

But the OP did pull it with his kid and is only in it a few hundred bucks. Very little downside and a good memory.

Sport? If I'm ripping baseball with my kid to build out base sets and have a little fun I'm probably just going topps chrome baseball value or blaster box. $40-$80 at target or many places online.

The chances of hitting something big out of here is almost non-existent.

Any value in gettting topps chrome retail boxes?

I guess it all depends on your definition of value. But I would say in most scenarios the answer is No. If your just collecting and want a handful of $3-$5 big name players, then you will be happy.

The Topps chrome value/blaster boxes are $40. The chances of you pulling a card close to the cost of the box are slim. You would have to be lucky and grab the box that has the "case hit"..... or pull an Ohtani. They will have big hits though if you buy enough of them

The chrome mega boxes will be out in about a week. I ordered a box so we will see what the 2026 mega's will be like, but I imagine a lot of the same as the blasters, except they will have x-fractors. and even then x-fractors will only move the value up by $1 unless its Ohtani or the current flavor of the month like Murakami.

Now, other Topps sets like Series 1 or 2, Stadium Club, and Heritage. Then, yes. Those value boxes are only $25. and most of them have variation cards so your odds increase a bit on finding that $10-$20 card.

I am a sucker for Topps Archives blaster boxes. Easily the most fun rip for cost. My first Archives box I pulled a $100 Ohtani image variation and a Skenes image variation on the next box. But they have taken me back to even by now. But such a cool set of cards. Same for Heritage.

I will say that Bowman Chrome retail is a resounding Yes for value. Both Blaster and mega boxes will reward you big time. But don't get cocky bc those reward hits can be repetitive with the same hits on your next box.

I pulled the Ohtani I mentioned in the OP from a Bowman mega box from Dick's. Someone sold that same card for $5K.

That’s a nice freaking card. Make biggest pulled hit so far was a Bo Nix Kaboom out of a freaking Absolute Christmas Advent calendar…
