Props to them. It’s entirely stupid for them to just roll around at 30% throttle. It was hilarious to watch Brad go from 30th to the lead in a lap and a half. Just saying frick it. Lol

All right then.

Frees up time wasted watching an exhibition race.

Not to pile on, but by your logic the first 35 races of last season were exhibitions, or at least the first 26. Every regular season game in the NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL is an exhibition.

The obsession with playoffs and drama takes away from the actual race or game. Winning a cup race is a big deal, especially for guys who don't win many. Honestly, if he clinches in Martinsville, Homestead will probably be a great race. Everybody going for the win and not giving a single frick about points.

And you know what sucks. The stage break. See, all the other teams knew all they had to do was stay on lead lap by the break and everything gets reset.

I hate the stage stoppages. Imagine if no stoppage then all cars are racing not fuel saving. RFK showed how stupid the series is for making fake breaks and I really wanted them to lap the whole field. Damn near worked too.

If stages don’t stop no one is doing that dumb shite.

Exactly. Meaning they are racing full out. And we’d have better strategy like when to pit knowing there’s no stoppage. Plus we likely do see more smaller packs instead of one big one. Stages kill all the old strategies we used to see.

Nascar basically sold out to advertisers. They don’t want many cars a lap or more down. Stages keep more on lead lap. Its all manufactured. Plus stages create the 80% of all racing action on restarts. Instead of fixing car they just make up fake stoppages to create manufactured drama.

Its like a participation award done twice a race

I’m in favor of ditching stage breaks altogether and just awarding bonus points half way during the race. Heck, even if road courses and superspeedways got rid of them it would be fantastic.

Award points for the top ten at halfway.

And bring back bonus points for leading laps and most laps led.

Add a bonus point for pole position. And if someone can lead the most laps, win the pole, lead at halfway, have the fastest lap, and win the race, add a perfect race bonus point.

Leading a lap is too easy and devalues it.

I would say lead 5 laps you get a lap led bonus. Eliminates the ability for 20 cars to get a bonus point which makes it moot.

However if you lead on the last lap then give lap lead bonus point.

You don’t think leading a lap for a bonus point yesterday would’ve made some of the racing more interesting? I disagree with you there.

This is going way back to the 80s, but does anyone remember the DieHard Hard Charger award? It was one of the contingency awards given for running at the front of the field. I think you got 5 points for being in the lead, 4 for running second, down to 1 point for being fifth. But I can't remember if it was scored every lap or at certain points in the race.

I know that's what the stage points mirror, and doing it for every lap would make season end point totals insane, but I wonder if something like that would help make running up front all race more important.

No, because it’s too much risk for 1 pt. Yesterday only a few drivers had any chance at title so no need to risk wrecking for 1 lousy pt.

I also think if it’s done make it just reg season.

I think that was a sponsor award using final results. And end of year they listed top 5 and got some money or trophies Was just a sponsor creation to get visibility if I recall correctly

I just think 3 stages are dumb. Race isn’t official til halfway. Why award points at some number that’s not halfway?

You also saw backmarkers try to get their sponsors exposure.

Plus one bonus point for leading a lap could lead to another bonus point for most laps.

I miss that aspect of nascar.

The chase ruined it all. Starting at Daytona in Feb all they talk about is chase. That means only chase drivers get real air time. Even early in year they know certain teams/drivers win’t make it so they don’t get discussed much.

Its ruined Nascar. All because Kenseth won a title without winning a race.

To finish 2nd in Nascar is still a big deal. But nowadays it’s only winner or chase that gets discussed as mattering. Yes, 2nd is first loser and they took that phrase and ran with it as if its meaningless to finish in top 10. That was a phrase used to express how hard the team worked all week and driver raced only to come up a spot short. But its still a big deal considering all that can go wrong.

Used to be getting a top 10 meant something. They used to track top 5’s and top 10’s (and 15 and 20). Now all you see is chase standings and above or below and don’t even list top 5/10 anymore.

But Kenseth did win a race. One. In February. But everyone else stunk that year. Not his fault he just had to keep it in the fairway to dominate.

And you’re not lying. SVG was top ten all race. Yet you barely heard about him. He was in position to be a player.

I stand corrected forgot about that early win. Back then Cup winner usually had several wins.

And yes SVG was only shown once he was wrecked pretty much. He’s made great strides this year.

I just hate how everything is all about the Cup winner. What that does is hurt the fanbase and its proved by declining TV numbers over years since Chase format.

Nascar is saying only one driver matters. The sport was about each race as its own event which is why they went to so many tracks back in the day. It was a challenge to win on so many different style tracks. And it mattered to win on those different tracks.

In all other sports you’re playing on the exact same type field or court. Same dimensions same everything. Nascar is unique and Cup series owners are trying to make it like them instead of promoting what makes Nascar unique and fun and challenging.

Which is why you need to go to as many race tracks as possible. Some tracks that have 2 dates shouldn’t. Maybe that along with a return to full season points. And a few doubleheader weekends too.

I think cup should switch to CW in the fall. No major sports on that channel. Not on Sundays.
