The video of Scott Speed in this reddit post shows something that I didn't notice from other videos. When Speed tries to steer out of there, the car was turning at first, and then suddenly plowed straight into the barrier even though he was going pretty slow. Something about the road surface made him lose grip (probably the camber fell off). So I don't blame him, he felt the car turning and thought he was going to make it out of there without power sliding.

Apparently he knocked a couple of people over. Someone told me a news story said when the portal metal fence moved, someone's foot got trapped underneath it until others could lift if off. You can actually see in the video some guys trying to push and then lift the fence.
BTW, some people are saying that the event was a disaster:
