For anyone who might have a deeper understanding than me, would today’s cars with more HP produce racing like that? Or is there more to it?

Back in that era, they had to run the factory hood and rear deck of the street car. As a result, the cars were not as slick as they are today and depending on the car model, some makes had an aero advantage/disadvantage. That helped create some of those gaps.

Additionally, the plate they ran back then had a bigger opening so they had more throttle control and could actually setup runs. They could get setup in the draft and not hold it wide open while behind someone. That allowed you to get a run and when you pulled out, mash it to floor and create those passing opportunities with the sling shot. The cars also had much more power than today's limited engine so that helped as well.

Finally, NASCAR was more lenient back then with the rules. Teams had full reign with shock and spring combos and their suspension. They also massaged those bodies to get the most out of them. As a result, the teams with the better money and engineering typically built cars that could separate themselves some from the teams that did not have all the resources. Some of those cars were punching bigger holes in the air than others and that helped create that type of racing.

Good summary. My thought is with more HP and worse tires they would have to slow down in corners which would allow more passing on straights. Make the tires a bit skinnier and less grippy with more power. Along with the front aero changes.

I often wonder how different the sport would be if it hadn't lost Dale. He was one of the few with the clout and balls to call NASCAR out on their bullshite. I remember one time he told Bill France to his face the race package sucked and was dangerous.

Obviously when he passed he was nearing the end of hsi driving career but at that time the teams he owned were also up front nearly every week. How much would they have continued to listen to his input as an owner?

Tony and Shrub tried to pick up the mantle and speak out against the dumb shite they do, and Denny to an extent. And, NASCAR crucified them for it.

Why do we need a one-hour pre-race show, especially when that show will not discuss the real issues concerning stock car racing?

I believe it would be vastly different. I doubt the chase would exist and the sport would have someone outside the tower that still had influence.

Bill France Jr respected Dale Sr and would listen to his advice if it was given. When Earnhardt spoke his words had weight behind it. He was an icon of the sport and at the time the only second 7 time champion and management knew he had a firm grasp on things. I don't think Tony, Denny or Shrub have ever had the kind of influence with NASCAR management that Sr had.

Nascar sold out to TV execs long ago. Granted, all sports sold out but Nascar did it worse.

Most sports are still a semblance of themselves. TV execs convinced Nascar to make all these changes to spice up races and its not close to what it was. Stages, a clone clown car, rulings and many others.

They drove away their most loyal fans and are lost drifting into lala land. I think its happening in other sports too but they have much larger fan bases so it will take longer to unwind.

Look how many complain about football commercials and even adding a fake 2 minute warning for college that fans know is 100% TV commercial related.

People still tolerate it in football to a degree and give up some of the lesser popular sports. But in time even the big sports will falter as they are too commercialized.

Nascar had a loyal and I mean loyal following. Had they stayed true to it then other non fans would have embraced its culture and followed which would have kept growing the sport. But TV execs convinced Nascar to change track types and rules plus many other gimmicks which lost 80% of their loyal fans.

NASCAR as a sport is fricked up and the product is awful, but I will always love Talladega.

There’s too much secret strategy, code word BS for green flag pit stops. I know you don’t want to pit under green alone, but it seems like this happens at least once in every Daytona/Talladega race.

I absolutely hate this style of plate racing. Bring me back 01-07. These things are too slow

The photo of Berry's bird-splattered windshield won't embed, but this made me laugh.
