It's funny waiting for the last car on the grid, a Red Bull.

Both Racing Bulls ahead of Lawson, Norris barely gets past Stroll after fumbling the start, and Lewis back on top. Pretty good Sprint.

What a race!

Ham wins!

Yuki P6, ahead of a Mercedes and a McLaren!

Antonelli started ahead of Yuki but Yuki got him at the start. Yuki then held up Antonelli for the whole race. Kimi was never more than a second behind, almost always in DRS range. Kimi was hating life for 19 laps.

Looks like the McLaren really doesn't like dirty air.

And Norris is soft.

Pretty boring sprint. Yuki is legit and deserves the RB ride, I still think Oscar is better pure driver than Lando.

Happy for Ferrari win.

Not all that happy it was Luigi, but it works I guess.

Sainz pitted for tires, and still passed three guys by the end. Look at the last lap time of the three bottom guys. Their tires were cooked.

Doohan and Bort came together and stopped at the hairpin which held up Hulk as well. Sainz went around them.

Did you turn the race off the second Ham crossed the line?

Whoops.

I was in Yuki's cockpit making sure he stayed ahead of Kimi and Lando. So yes, I missed the action at the end there.

Max loves a pointy car... it's clear as day... get that sucker rotated during the mid corner and fire off... I like the same when sim racing... brake late, rotate and let the p/u eat... SUPER quick... heck, that's what Lewis loves as well.

I learned a lot about racing lines following motorcycle racing in the 90s and early 2000s. I remember a discussion about why Americans won so many 500cc championships in the 80s. Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, and Wayne Rainey won 13 championships in 16 years (1978-1993). I can't remember who was saying this, but the theory was the difference in experience between American and European riders. In Europe they moved up through the 125 and 250 classes. With low horsepower, these guys learned to round the corner and maximize mid-corner speed. In the US, the superbike class was established in the mid 70s, and these bikes had more horsepower than 250s. Some of the American riders also had dirt track experience. The American riders learned to brake deeper, square off the corner to line up the exit, and hit the gas earlier and harder, using the horsepower. So when guys moved to the 500 class, the Americans understood better than the Europeans how to ride the high-horsepower bikes. So I imagine it's the same concept in F1. Schumacher also liked a loose car. The guys who are comfortable with a car that rotates faster have the advantage.

Another story I remember was Kenny Roberts, who had his own team and was talking about a Japanese rider who rode for him. Roberts and Rainey brought the guy to California for training at Roberts' dirt track training ranch to get more practice steering with the rear tire, and at Laguna Seca. Roberts was watching the rider take a certain corner at Laguna Seca lap after lap, and he told the rider that he needed to move a few inches closer to the outside line when he was braking, and to position himself more consistently. He said the guy couldn't understand Roberts trying to adjust his position by inches. Roberts and Rainey complained that the younger generation of riders just didn't have the precision of the 80s generation. Maybe that's why a few guys like Mick Doohan and later Valentino Rossi dominated for years; there weren't as many great riders as there were in the 80s.

Miatas are the same. Momentum cars as they have no power, so keeping as much speed as possible is paramount. A Vette driven correctly will have a very different line in many corners.

Sometimes you can see extreme examples of the power out principle in Nascar when they diamond the corners on banked ovals. Come in low and hot, go up the bank scrubbing speed until it rotates, then stand on the gas coming down the bank and out low. I don't watch much anymore but Stewart used to do it pretty often. Sacrifice the middle to gain in and out.

Wow, an unexpected order at the top. Nice!

Hadjar beat Antonelli, and is less than 0.1s behind a Ferrari, and less than 0.2s behind the other Ferrari in P5!

Down at the bottom of the top 10, Albon used just one set of softs, so he must have used an extra set in Q1 or Q2, and had no chance to do anything in Q3. Yuki slid off the track on his fast lap so he only had his first banker lap. One of the TV guys thought it looked like he cooked his tires pushing a little too hard. But Yuki and Alex have now made Q3 in all three qualy sessions so far, awesome!
