When I was growing up, 30plus year old "rookies" were common in Winston Cup.

I remember when Bobby Labonte won his first cup race, Ken Squier referred to Labonte during the broadcast as one of the upcoming "Young Lions of the sport"

He was 31 or 30 when he won his first cup race, the 95 Coke 600.

Didn’t get to see one lap and chastain wins. He probably wants me to quit watching every race.

Here we go, 23XI and Front Row file antitrust suit against NASCAR.

From the lawsuit:

“The France family and NASCAR are monopolistic bullies. And bullies will continue to impose their will to hurt others until their targets stand up and refuse to be victims. That moment has now arrived.”

It's hard to paint Jordan and Hamlin as victims, but I've always thought the franchise system served to limit competition.
And there should definitely be changes in how the money is split. NASCAR, i.e. the France family, keeps way too much of the pie.

Jordan's got deep pockets and good lawyers so the France family could finally get their comeuppance.

The best quote about the agreement all but the two teams in on the lawsuit signed with NASCAR just before the playoffs started, from the ESPN article:

quote:

"A third team said, NASCAR 'put a gun to our heads' and we 'had to sign.' A fourth described NASCAR's tactics as that of a 'communist regime.' None of these teams would permit their identities to be publicly revealed for fear of retribution from NASCAR."

Maybe it will change now, but this is the core, bottom-line truth about NASCAR: It was created, has existed and continues to exist not for the drivers, not for the teams, not for the sponsors, not for the TV networks and damn sure not for the fans, but for one purpose and one purpose only, to enrich William H.G. France and his heirs.

In the heydays of the early 2000s a breakaway circuit may have worked but now NASCAR owns too many tracks including Talladega and Daytona and no way is the sport healthy enough to survive a split.
