re: 2024 Formula 1 season Thread

Komatsu has made it clear that Haas needed to maximise pre-season mileage as much as possible this year to get as much data as possible and ensure it develops its car from there. To that end, it had already completed two filming days before today (when it topped the mileage rankings at 148 laps).
The shift in focus is perhaps best demonstrated by the sight of the VF-24 adorned with aero rakes early in the day. Magnussen couldn’t recall driving a Haas with such equipment before and seemed to think it was a genuine (if unusual) symbol of the team’s new Komatsu approach - as was Komatsu’s presence at the track before and after several others had arrived or left.
“It seems like we’re not dreaming so much this year,” said Magnussen. “We know the job we have ahead of us and the situation we’re in.” - SMM

And a new TP doesn't fix things in one month. Ever.
Fair enough. On the engineering side it will take time to see if Komatsu's leadership (under poverty conditions) will lead to enough improvement to lift Haas off the bottom of the points chart.
But there's another area where Haas has been frustrating to watch, and that's race day performance from the strategists, pit crews, and drivers. There's no reason why they can't make noticeable improvements in each of these areas, even if the car doesn't have great pace and eats its tires too quickly. For example, I don't think there's any excuse for Haas having no pit stop game. I think the DHL pit stop competition is scored like a race, the top-10 pit stop times for each race are assigned race points. Haas almost never had a top-10 pit stop throughout the 2023 season. (Mercedes looks pretty pathetic too considering their championship aspirations. AlphaTauri looks pretty good!)

See my post directly above yours.
Doubtful we see an immediate jump up in performance but from Mag's words it's a different attitude at Haas now.

A drain cover came loose and damaged the Ferrari in testing?
What are the fricking chances it was them, once again.

And still early, but Rapey Spice and RB have to be starting to question their decision to retain Perez already... Dude is over a second back from Ferrari and behind Merc, Mclaren, Williams, Aston.
Still early, but incredible difference between what Max can do in the RB and Checo.

Hoping Ferrari shows up this year and then implodes next year when Hamilton is there.

I know it was on C4s, but Ricciardo posted a great time for being in the V-CARB.

?? | Ferrari's long-run pace is very encouraging.
Unlike last year, the SF-24 is producing consistent laps across race simulations.

We didn't quite have the data to answer that in full earlier, but we have now had some significant long runs from a handful of drivers to get a feel for comparative pace:
Stroll (C3) 20 laps
Sargeant (C3) 18 laps
Magnussen (C3) 17 laps
Ricciardo (C3) 16 laps
Hamilton (C1) 16 laps
The longest of those, Stroll's, started on a 1m37.526s but by the end he'd tailed off into the mid-1m39s. It was a significant step on from Sargeant's stint though - by the end the Williams was in the 1m40s, although he headed straight back out at the end of that run, suggesting he was on a heavier fuel load.
Magnussen's pace held up quite nicely in the Haas - he was still in the mid-1m38s by the end of his stint - but the Hamilton C1 stint had a significant drop off. He started out on a 1m36.947s but ended his run with three laps in the 1m39s region.
Ricciardo's stint in the RB looked pretty handy; there was a particularly fast (comparatively) outlier at the start of this stint that made us think it wasn't a long run, but the 16-lap stint suggested otherwise. He was still in the 1m37s at the end of that and now, eight laps into his next run, has just logged a 1m36.048s.

In this comparison the Ferrari looks suspiciously good, with a respective pace suggesting Carlos Sainz would have beaten Sergio Perez by... a full minute over the 57-lap distance.
Stint 1
Sainz (C3) - avg. 1m28.21s, 15 laps
Perez (C3) - avg. 1m28.65s, 13 laps
Stint 2
Sainz (C2) - avg. 1m27.30s, 17 laps
Perez (C2) - avg. 1m27.46s, 18 laps
Stint 3
Sainz (C1) - avg. 1m25.38s, 17 laps
Perez (C1) - avg. 1m27.13s, 21 laps
