Texas has become the face of the 1.5 mile “cookie cutter” tracks that sprang up everywhere. It needs a redesign/reduced banking etc. Heck, I think all of them would do well to have a permanent chicane in the middle of the back stretch
NASCAR has created what is essentially plate racing on a lot of tracks with the EFI restrictions. That’s trying to draw the lowest common denominator fane with artificial “close” racing. I hope Indy stays away from that.
Other than Indy, Daytona and the other classic tracks, ovals have turned in to boring processions.
To add. It’s a travesty that everything possibles isn’t done to get Indy back to Watkins Glen.

Atlanta Motor Speedway just added banking (more than TMS and CMS). The design is still the same but it is different. Charlotte doesn’t need to change. It is the original out of the three.

Agree. I’m not a road track fanatic but I have always enjoyed watching Watkins Glen on the NASCAR side. I’m still fairly new to Indy Car but I believe there would be some great racing there.

The biggest surprise of qualifying is how bad Team Rahal did, down at the bottom with the AJ Foyt drivers.
After that it's a bit surprising to see Rosenqvist and Sato at the sharp end of the grid.
Andretti had a mediocre qualifying session, not sure why.
Qualifying order was reverse standings. The temps rose during the session so the guys who went first had a bit better downforce, but the guys who went last had perhaps more rubber laid down.
Jimmie Johnson had his best career qualifying results, and I think if he stays out of trouble he will do well. There was only one practice session before qualy and Johnson did the most laps of anyone. He said they focused on race setup (and obviously getting a feel for the car as the tires wore down) and didn't do a qualy simulation until the very end of practice. So I think he could have qualified higher if they had focused on that.

Stupid question forthcoming. Im heading to race tomorrow, F1 fan now but grew up Indy and Nascar fan. I have very little experience with Indy post 2002 or so other than highlights and some sporadic races, here are my questions (sorry I get they are elementary).
Do we know expected pit windows for tomorrow's race and how many stops are expected/are a good strategy?
Is there a dominant team or teams that I should expect to see out front tomorrow or is it more up in the air?
I know some of the household names, but any recs on "pick this guy and root for him because xyz"
I used to go to races at Burke in Cleveland in early 90s and went to the US 500 protest race at Michigan during the first yr of IRL split, so I have some old cred.

Could not agree more. The facilities need an upgrade but the track itself is one of the best in the country.

I never remember from year to year how many pit stops there are in a particular race. The announcers always discuss the pit windows early in the race.
The favorite has to be Dixon. I think he's won the race five times, including last year. Other than Dixon, the Penske guys should be favorites.
Among the newer guys, Pato O'Ward won the 2nd race of last year's double-header. I think McLaughlin had a P2 in one of last year's races. They should be strong. Also, Grosjean is a new fan favorite. This is only his 2nd oval race, but he did well at the Gateway oval last year.
This will be a fun race to watch in person! Guaranteed to be some crashes and some good action at the end of the race.

Rossi gets a penalty for jumping the start and then his car has issues. Rossi has gone down hill over the last two seasons.

Not a good start for JJ. Back in 19th right now. Hopefully he can get adjusted throughout the race and go get some spots.

Sato got screwed by his own teammate.

Weak looking crowd there. Looks like a couple thousand.

Attendance looks poor at TMS. Would be a perfect day to go out and watch these cars and have some cobeer

Yellows, yellows, yellows.
Dixon is quietly hanging in the top 5. Still a threat.

This race is going to have more yellow laps than green laps.

The three Penske cars are at the front of the field. Three out of four Ganassi cars are in the top 10. Three out of four Andretti cars are out of the race. At least the remaining Andretti car (Herta) is in the top 10.
