“ Piquet was speaking in November to Motorsport Talk’s Ricardo Oliveira in Portuguese about Hamilton’s clash with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix in 2021, which ended with the Dutch driver going off the track and suffering a major impact with the barriers.”

“ The video of the interview was picked up by Brazilian media including CNN, which reported his words as he referred to the incident. It included an epithet that can be translated as the N-word.”

Not defending, but have read the term he used is a generic slander to any race… That whites, blacks, browns are all referred to by the word

I doubt we’d see this outrage over a word that translates to something like idiot or moron.

I jumped on Twitter and there are multiple Portuguese speakers arguing the translation is definitely not directly to N word.

Why would press in the native language has say it is then?

Also many other Brazilian personalities and some drivers.

Piquet is just doing what he does. I'd probably just chalk it up to crazy old man/older generation than "that's not what it means"

You don’t think the press would lean more to one side making it a bigger deal than not?

This happened in soccer to Cavni as well… with a word sounding close to a N word in a foreign language getting misunderstood

Sure. Anything is possible.

Are there any reputable outlets saying the word isn't offensive?

Fwiw, the word is out there, so you can google the translation or see how it is used. From how it was translated to me, it is somewhere between "colored boy" and n-word.

No one is debating the word that was used.

Lewis called out America for no longer killing babies in the womb and nothing has been done about it yet.

Untrue. Many are angered with him for that.

True. I saw no response from F1 saying their drivers need to show more class when it comes to laws about the killing of fetuses in countries in which they don't live in.

Well, when fetuses count as viewers F1 will probably care more about them.

All those potential viewers went down the drain.

Piquet has been out of a car for 35 years and he still gets press.

Hamilton will be giving hot takes and pissing off fans for years to come.

Just imagine had this come out last November when he said it, before the season finale. Would have been fabulous drama.

I just wish they'd keep their political and social views to themselves so I wouldn't have to read about their and other posters political and social views in a thread that is dedicated to the Formula 1 season.

If the government thought fetuses were humans, we’d be able to list them as dependents on a tax return.

That being said, I’m very happy for two race weekends in a row.
