I am about to write a book... sorry.
The number of people biking in our neighborhoods has been amazing. Every year during the summer my wife organizes group rides for the kids and this year we had tons of parents (and non-parents) too. I broke off and lead some rides with the faster adults. We still have quite a few riding. There is one lady in her 60s I am so proud of, she hadn't ridden a bike more than a mile or so in over a decade now she is riding 7 days a week and rides 15 miles each day. She runs along like a metronome at 13.5 mph.
The only negative is I am way behind on our bikes maintenance because my repair stand always has someone else bike in it. I am sure I am preaching to the choir in saying I HATE working on big box store bikes. Two big takeaways is people have no idea how no idea what chain lube is and people love to ride with their saddle 50mm too low. It is nice to see how happy they are to ride a bike that works (kinda) properly and don't hit their knees on their chest.
I got started in cycling as a result of the Boy Scout's Cycling merit badge when I was 14. It requires multiple rides of up to 50 miles. The merit badge counselor for it was my best friend's father. My bike was a 24" wheeled Schwinn Varsity that probably weighed 35 pounds. After meeting with him and his attempts to tune it up he instead sold (more like gave) me a Raleigh International for $75. It was Reynolds 513 tubing with pierced Nervex lugs with chromed seat/chain stays, fork, and head tube lugs. It was all Campy except for the Weinmann center-pull brakes. I will never forget how fast I felt on that bike, if it weren't for that bike I may never have discovered the joy of cycling.
I absolutely love late night rides. There is a two-mile loop in the neighborhood that from 10-4 on weeknights I rarely see more than 1 or 2 cars. I usually never look at the computer and normally don't even wear my HRM strap. Just me the bike and the road.
The thing that gets me is seeing them up on the hoods, loafing along at 28 mph while they are stretching, taking off leg warmers, eating a meal and my favorite is watching them drink a beer. Where else can you see the worlds best athletes enjoying a brew while in the midst of an elite race? While I have never been offered a beer handup in a road race it is the very best part of cyclocross especially when it is from a hot girl who I am just sure is eyeing my blasted quads. Cyclocross is pure dirty suffering but a beer always makes me think I am faster than I am.
I just hope the cycling enthusiasm continues at least long enough for me to actually tell someone where they can actually buy a new bike when they ask. We have several to loan but if you don't ride a 52 or 53cm you are out of luck in our house. Yeah I am 6' and ride a 53cm frame but that 275mm of exposed post and slammed 130mm stem makes me look pro dammit.

That said, it warms my heart to hear from coworkers almost weekly that they can’t find a bike to purchase for themselves or a child, relative etc bc all local places sell out almost immediately. Not because they can’t get one, that’s ridiculous, but because cycling has gained so much attention and popularity this year. It’s addicting but healthy. Hope the trend continues.

I don’t remember what got me hooked on cycling in the first place, probably was the Tour de France, or maybe a French video I was shown in high school about the sport, was kinda weird though. But I actually don’t ride a bike that much or haven’t in years. But these races has encouraged me to at-least get on a spin bike more. I need to exercise a lot more

I think it's hard to appreciate the TdF or other races if you know no iota of how tough and rigorous they are.

I think they likely blast past with about 300m to go on Huy

Bump for the Giro. I’m watching on FloSports.
I’ve been busy today so haven’t had a chance to catch the action. I know it was a ITT, unusual for the first stage of the giro as I believe it’s usually a team TT.

Ganna won and Thomas put time into all of the GC rivals so it was a good day for Ineos.
Miguel Angel Lopez had a crazy crash near the second time check. He shifted his right hand to the lower bar and hit a bump and literally went sideways. Taken to the hospital.
YT of just the crash

true story: i raced all the hell over the southeast back 8-10 years ago. got pretty good; raced with lnomm on here one time when i ran into him at a race in pensacola. didn't know him before the race but realized he was a TD poster later on.
ANYWAY i was racing in minden one time and since most of my racing was in TN i was very accustomed to climbs and so i thought that race would be a pushover. long story short there was a climb in this circuit race (we had to go around 4x or so) and a prime for the first KOM. so naturally i took off to impress the flatlanders of LA only to realize it was actually a pretty decent climb and i totally blew up afterward. i stayed in the front group but the third time up that hill i had nothing left in the tank after the stunt i pulled and when i came around the flat section a couple dudes were hooting and hollering sitting on the back of a pickup drinking beer (this was like 10 am on a saturday) so i just said frick it and pulled off the road and asked if i could have one and just quit the race.
later found out it was Mitch Evans who offered me the beer (the organizer of the rouge roubaix at the time) and ended up racing with him and lnomm later on.
fun stuff. training and racing was one of the most time consuming hobbies i've ever had but by far the most satisfying. the first time you win real money racing you feel like you've accomplished something.

I don’t remember what got me hooked on cycling in the first place,
had a chip on my shoulder because i grew up dirt poor and my daddy saved and saved to buy me a red schwinn 10 speed for my birthday. i rode it down the driveway and back that night and put it up all excited for the next day only for it to get stolen out of our garage.
6 months or so later my dad found a bike that was a piece of crap held together with duct tape and i drug that thing to school and drug it home. if you stopped pedaling the bike stopped moving. the idea of a bike coasting in the wind was an alien notion to me.
fast forward to LSU. i'm in my 3rd year and looking for some way to build credit and lo and behold, fellow TD poster 'mung' showed up at my apartment on a lime green cannondale with orange logos and airbrushed designs on it.
i was astounded. he had this crazy 'suntour' shifter that CLICKED to change gears.
i had to have it.
the year was 1988 and the olympics were in full swing and i managed to get the local BR bike shop to sell me a bike on credit (a whopping $500 i think) but the custom graphics were no longer available and i settled on a white cannondale 'usa olympic' with blue lettering.
i bought a pair of clipped shoes and pulled the pedal laces tight and.....fell over at the first stoplight.
anyway, that bike was like snorting coke to me. i took river road back & forth to LSU every day and brought the bike into class with me and just left it in the back of the room. none of the teachers said anything.
a favorite memory was riding along nicholson away from campus and seeing sugar cane all over the side of the road from the truck and picking one up and chewing on it while riding back to my apartment.
the racing addiction came much later after i moved to nashville in the late 1990s and swapped the old AL for a carbon LOOK.
i know..random story here. i still love the freedom of bombing down a big hill. nothing gets me pumped like a hard ride.

While the EF Palace colab kit isn't everybody's taste you could buy it from Rapha if you were a Rapha Club member. It apparently sold out in minutes.

What do we think about the EF/Rapha/Palace Giro bike and jerseys?
i really like the pink EF kits, but like these even more. it just adds some character to world tour racing. it is still pretty conservative compared to the crazy shite that mario cippolini used to wear, but i like it!
also, wondering what everyone's opinion is regarding quinn simmons (young american pro from durango) getting suspended from team trek segafredo?
and what about that finish at LBL? so much going on in pro cycling right now!

I guess you need to clap with your own color emoji. I think the whole thing was silly but it is best to stay out of divisive discussions in public.
LBL had a great finish. So close but it didn't actually matter since JA got relegated for his move on Hirschi.
Twitter video of finsh
But JA's mistake at the line is a lesson for all, never celebrate until you are 100% sure you will win. JA sitting up and Rog throwing the bike for the line:
ETA Hirschi got robbed by JA as IMO he would have won which is incredible considering his La Flèche Wallonne win.

The Trek CEO is doubling down on being woke first with not selling any more bikes to police and now with this

That is fake news, Trek never stopped selling bikes to police departments. IIRC Fuji did for a period of time to evaluate the situation, not sure if they have made a final decision yet.

stage 3 over in the GIRO. Thomas is not himself lost 10 minutes on the main riders. Likely not going to compete for the pink jersey. Word is he may have an injury that may cause him to abandon.

Best way to watch the Giro? Flobikes?
Posted on 10/5/20 at 10:22 am to Cdawg
Fubu TV cycling or flobikes.
I did flobikes because it is a year subscription instead of the rest of the year.

for sure. i was watching the replays and noticed that JA's move caused hirschi to come unclipped from his pedals and knocked his hand off the bars.
happy for roglic though, to pull a don beebe and pip JA at the line.

Crazy weird crash, too. The rider hit a dip in the road and a bunch of bidons came out and then he hits one and hits his left side hard. I'd be surprised if he continues. Then Yates lost 3 minutes today on Etna surprisingly. Wide open race now with a Nibili/Fuglsang/Krischiwick battle
