Yeah people are speculating her left leg hit the post that the guard rail is attached to

I just rewatched it since I got home and a bigger screen and I am 95% that what ripped her open was the bolts that attach the cross pieces to the uprights. They stand proud quite a bit then you add the compression of the muscle against it and it makes sense to me at least. Her quad is torn and connective tissue damage as well, she is having surgery in Bologna.

ETA I should note the course in Imola did NOT have posts that sit proud of the rail like the one above.

Some have opined that she was on the front brake and it was wobbling due to going in and out of the traction window as she came off and on the brake. I think it is too fast a wobble for her to be modulating a brake that fast, but who knows.

I have my fingers crossed but can't really see her back for the 2020/1 Summer Olympics which is a shame since she can't defend her gold and maybe improve her bronze from 16. Even at her young age this makes her second major crash.

ETA some screen caps.

This one shows the bolts I think did the damage before she hits them

This is the moment she is sliding over them

This shows those bolts after she has slid past them

Of course, we have no idea what she may have hit after going over.

The damage seems to match where her leg would have crossed the bolts.

ETA after all that I am 100% wrong. If you watch after that set of bolts she rotates over and her leg hits the next post on the back side. The pictures don't show it but you can see her left leg get whipped out between the following to frames as it hits the post.

You can see how far the left leg is separated from the bike in the second picture. Sorry for the crappy screen caps its the best I have.

Any current updates? I couldn’t figure out what happened to lead to that. I only watched the footage one time but She let up before the right turn (still on the left side) as standard but then caught the rail and it was over... Was so sudden. I’ve always been taught to hug the inside but I’m not a professional cyclist.
I hope for a full recovery for her. This escalated so quickly.

She was setting up for what in the car and motorcycle world we call a late apex turn. It is most often used on motorcycles (also called squaring off the turn) because you have less lean angle which gives more stability and traction in the turn and you can get upright quicker and on the gas quicker. It also maximizes momentum. These are all things important on a bike too.

The bottom line is something upset the stability of the bike whether is is one of those inexplicable high-speed wobbles, poor brake modulation or a mechanical failure or she simply overcooked it. I don't think she was going too fast at turn in. I think if it was a brake issue with the front only application (clear she is not on the rear brake) it wouldn't have cause such a fast oscillation though I know some disagree.

I would never second guess the braking skills of a World Champion/medal-winning cyclist but I am pretty sure if it were me and I was having a front braking issue I would have been dragging the back brake at some point before impact, it wasn't that quick. I will say I am an unconventional road bike braker in that I use FAR more rear brake than front and I don't have the WC TT skills to go through that turn without both hands on the bull horns.

Man I was thinking our sleuthing skills would be spent on who in the World Tour was doping and how versus this horrible question.

I just did a quick check of YT and the only person offering an opinon on the crash is Durianrider and much to my chagrin* he agrees it is a speed wobble caused by have the weight shifted by being in "the horns". I call the lower bar the bull horn and the upper bar the aero extension but he is an Ozzie so everything is backwards.

* Durianrider agreeing with me makes me think I am wrong, he is a bloviating moron on most things so when we agree on anything I second guess myself.

I’ll have to catch the replay but been mostly watching on the NBCSN app on my iPad. I had to pay some extra for that.

I’ve noticed it’s on the Olympic channel right now.

Lawson came in around 25 behind Brandon McNulty. G road super strong he is in really good form for the Giro assuming it happens. Dumolin almost high side it coming on to the race course and Rohan was not at his best today. Ganna looked super strong and took the the win by 20+ seconds. Wout came in second, so no double rainbow for him.

There is snow on top of Stelvio already. A bunch of giro stages will likely need to be changed in the second and third week.

Wow that is a nasty injury. Reminds me a bit when Taylor Phinney shredded his leg at the US RR National Championship.

Just got around to watching the UCI Men’s Time Trial. Was interesting. cool for Italy to have their rider get the gold.

On to the woman’s road race tomorrow.

Thread slowed down as a football game broke out.

Pog on a solo break with 40k left. Probably setting up Rog for a shot at a consolation prize.

Julian Alaphilippe FTW. Great late solo break.

That chase group could have brought him back if they had tried...

WvA takes second Hirschi with the bronze

Lance predicted no TdF rider would win... yet 5 of the top 6 finishers did ride the tour only Jakob Fuglsang in 5th didn't.
