I didn’t expect Wheeler to get a deal that nice. He’s good at times, but he’s been hurt or just so so a lot. Seems like the Phillies paid him on potential rather than production.

Quick analysis of the Padres-Rays deal, which @Ken_Rosenthal said was close:
- Tommy Pham turns 32 in March and has less control but is high-OBP guy, which SD needs
- Hunter Renfroe has power, excellent OF D but a low OBP
- Evaluators adore Xavier Edwards, a dynamic 2B prospect

Will be interesting to see if the Rays can work on Renfroe's OBP. Chad Mottola did a great job turning Pham, D'arnaud, Choi and others into far more patient hitters

Was just informed by someone familiar with the situation that Gerrit Cole will sign with the #Angels. Both camps are working to finalize incentives and signing bonus, but a deal is agreed upon in principle.

Surprised so many catchers have found new homes and Romine is still available. Wondering what type of money he is expecting.

The whole Lerner statements was part of their public negotiating.
Serves several purposes.
One if you can't resign one or both at least the fans may have lower expectations with coming out and saying they cant afford both.
Two it potential could help with saving money on each of their contracts both among other teams coming in with lower offers and maybe them not asking as much from the Nationals.
This second one doesn't work as well when both players have the same agent though
The Lerners can clearly afford both after showing that they are willing to go over the salary cap for two straight years in a win now mentality. They managed to stay below it all year to reset the taxes on going over.
Im sure the goal is still to stay under but Lerners have let Rizzo spend in the past.
