I understand why the events of the finish played out but that doesn't mean it should be acceptable. The culture of stock car racing has always been that way, one of the reasons why I appreciate open wheel so much - if you rub both of you are likely going for a ride.
ETA: perhaps a different topic, but I think the increased safety factor of today's cars has made things like dumping drivers much more acceptable. I liken it to football helmets - the technology has progressed to where people feel invincible and now nobody cares about proper tackling they go for highlight reel hits instead.

Lol you people are nuts. NASCAR has been doing everything in their power to try to attract new fans. Zero chance they go all in fixing a race for some nostalgia.

That is true, and it will pay off in the long run better than bitching and whining, even it is warranted.

The cars have been able to be "wrecked by air" since back in the 90s
If you don't believe me go watch the 1997 500...

Wait what????
When was the Hanhs used by anybody before his death?

It was used in open wheel and IIRC, and that's a BIG if, a couple of drivers in NASCAR had used one a couple times
I believe it was some open wheel guy like John Andretti or Robby Gordon but either way it was like twice and not widespread AT ALL
The open faced helmet was a much bigger diversion from the norm at the time though I sort of doubt it would have saved his life

Type of helmet didn’t matter in Sr.’s case. The fatal injury was the basal skull ring fracture that happened when his head whipped forward. The results are pretty graphic.

The HANS device existed before he died, but I don't think any of the big three motorsports (NASCAR, IndyCar, and Formula 1) mandated its use. Many NASCAR drivers didn't like it because they felt it impaired their ability to move around, particularly their ability to get out of the car if it were on fire. Up to that point, a driver's biggest fear was fire, not hitting a wall and having head and neck injuries.
There were multiple factors in Earnhardt's case. The neck snapping forward without a restraint; the seat belt breaking causing him to be thrown forward and to the side when Schrader hit him; his seat itself wasn't very safe, etc.

Ratings for the Daytona 500 were down. It earned a 5.1 overnight rating, down from a 6.5 rating last year.
Some argue this is due to competing with the Olympics, but the 2014 Daytona 500 had to do the same (with a long rain delay) and still performed better.

It seems that Dillon and several on his team got tattoos on their arse celebrating their win yesterday.

At least Kyle can back it up on the track. He's an arse but easily the best pure talent in the field.

Exactly. KB can wheel a fricking car at the end of the day.

I'm sure it did make for some graphic results with his chin, etc but I'm not sure how a full faced helmet would have reduced how far his head whipped forward by any significant amount. Maybe I'm wrong

This is a good summary of the situation to me

My statement had a typo. The type of helmet didn’t matter.

Fords led 150 of the 207 laps. Including Blaney's 118
Chevy leads the fewest and finishes 1-2.
