Usage rate has something to do with it...
Look at the advanced metrics. It favors Gasol in pretty much every category.
Both are great players though. No doubt about that.

I still can't help but laugh at a lot of the MSB tards who think every good young player is counting down the days until they can leave their team and beg the lakers to offer them a contract.
Lakers have struck out in FA like 3 years running now.
It'll be 4 years when KD doesn't choose them either.
Saw this earlier:

The teams who have success in FA are the teams who have a good team & $ to spend. The Lakers, Knicks, etc have the latter, not the former.

This is why I advocate signing some good players & building up the talent base for a run at bigger names later. Need that infrastructure.

I have high hopes for Russell & Randle. Also really like Clarkson. Add some quality FA's to them. Start to build a winning culture. Then go.

I thought this line of thinking was almost dead.
We had a guy in the AD extension thread saying he was just going to force a trade to the Lakers in 2 years.
AD to the Lakers has been a decently strong ongoing meme on this board as well as others for at least a couple of years now.
Do people really not understand that aside from history and money to spend, the Lakers have basically nothing going for them? Philly has more of an identity than LAL at this point.

Hell the Lakers fans in this thread were acting like were going to sign Aldridge and DAJ

Salary cap increase or not, teams are making some ridiculously stupid signings. $10 million for Shumpert??? Whatever the Blazers gave Aminu. What kind of bizzaro world is this?
Seriously, no way on any planet are either of those guys worth more than $6 million. I don't care if the salary cap is $1 billion. That's just awful.

I'm not a fan of either Aldridge or Jordan with the Lakers as max guys. Aldridge is about to turn 30 and is in his prime. Although he's incredibly skilled and a good shooter, I've never been a huge fan of his game. 23/10 guys that shoot FTs well aren't growing off of trees or anything, but as much as it makes me cringe, I'd prefer Jordan in L.A.
Jordan is going to protect the rim, crash the boards and get you easy baskets. I know he wants to be more of a focal point, but that's not his game. Things that I really like about him: only 26, great athlete, great defender, doesn't need the ball in his hands, great in transition, hasn't missed a game in three years. Still, I don't think he's a max guy.
I'd still like to see the Lakers make a run at Cousins, but I fear they'll get raped. I'm content with them being bad again and making a big push in the 2016 FA market.

Cavs basically have to overpay to keep their own guys now.

There should be a period where teams scoop up players for great value after teams are done blowing their loads.

Durant is literally the only top tier FA in 2016. Lakers will be competing with teams that can offer him same/more money while still being much much closer to being contenders.
This year and 2017 are stacked with really good FAs. 16 has KD, a bunch of aging stars and that's about it.

The Grizz some how managed to do that early. Flipped a euro player that is never gonna play here for Matt Barnes and got Wright on that great deal.

Which will likely lead to them striking out again

He is the elite guy, you're right, but there's a lot of other attractive pieces to build a deep team around him. If Durant's foot is healthy, he'll be the #1 or #2 guy in a couple of years along with AD23. I think Russell is going to be a star, and if the Lakers trade him in a package for Cousins, you've already got a proven star. There's decent complimentary pieces on the team now in Clarkson/Randle, and I'm sure Kobe will remain in some reduced role (although he's always hard to peg)
If they strike out on bigs this year, you can get a lower-tier guy like Noah/Jefferson/Horford. I believe Mike Conley is in play as well, and maybe Bradley Beal. Can't remember if he's restricted or not.
ETA: The last two champions have proven that you don't need a super team with 2-3 max guys. You can win with cohesion and depth.

I would be interested to see some type of Butler and Durant trade.
Get to see a Durant/Rose led Chicago taking on Lebron and the Cavs.
I was wondering if it would take some type of
OKC:
Butler
Noah
Picks
Chi:
Durant
Adams

Cousins is not getting traded and Durant isnt going to LA...
Posted on 7/1/15 at 9:05 pm to MID_TN_VOL
If Durant goes anywhere it will be Washington. Teaming up with Wall and Beal with a decent rim protector would be a stacked team.

We were pumped because of a Woj tweet that said the Lakers were trying to accomplish that

Horford won't be leaving Atlanta. Guaranteed
Posted on 7/1/15 at 9:10 pm to RTR America
Yeah, but now you have to pull for Matt Barnes.

Apparently he is one of those guys that you will love when he plays for your team.
