Two Duke basketball players face charges related to a driving while impaired arrest Sunday, according to the News & Observer. The grandson of legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Michael Savarino, was arrested on suspicion of DWI, according to court records obtained by the News & Observer. Star Duke freshman Paolo Banchero has been charged with aiding and abetting DWI, a charge given to individuals in North Carolina who knowingly encourage, aid, advise or instigate another person to drive or attempt to drive while impaired.
quote:

Savarino joined the program as a walk-on in 2019 and was given a scholarship in the offseason. He played four minutes on Friday in Duke's 82-56 win over Army in which he recorded one rebound. Banchero, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, is averaging 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for the Blue Devils through three games. Their status moving forward is unclear.
Normally I wouldn’t really care about this news but it being K’s grandson I’d love to see his holier than thou response.

I thought Henry Ruggs would change a few people's attitudes about this but apparently not.

DUI penalties need to get ramped up - theres legit no excuse for this anymore with ride sharing apps and such being so prevalent. Driving drunk at this point in a major metro area is just being a complete selfish dickhead and all offenses need to be met with mandatory jail time and litter gang work, enough with the suspended licenses for 30 days and $500 fines.

It's Coach K's grandson with a top 3 pick in the 2022 draft.

It's getting brought up

It’s the number two story on the website after a pre-scheduled feature on Tom Brady.

I’m very curious how Paolo would also get charged in this. I’ve never heard of aiding a DUI.

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of it either, except in a case where someone actively interferes with the police.

Seems very clear that didn’t happen here as he was never booked or brought to jail and let go on his own, as one would for a minor in possession or a traffic ticket.

Considering the wording of “knowingly”, even a regular college student wouldn’t have those charges stick up, unless Banchero says something insane like they all took breathalyzers for fun and he saw Severino blow a .08 and/or knew his birthday to the month.

So it’s ultimately going to be a calculation on how mad K is plus how much media pressure the AD’s office thinks is going to be felt when determining a suspension for Banchero.

10 years ago, this would be one game at any school in America besides BYU or a service academy. Some may have even gone with 0 games.

Now I have no clue.
