18-game football schedule idea

(posted in Saints Talk, wanted to see what MSB thinks)
If they go to 18 (I'm not interested in whether you think they should do this), what if they started the season at the beginning of August? This would make for a 22-week regular season with four bye weeks. The regular season would end at the end of December, and the playoffs would be in January (as usual), and the Super Bowl would be the first weekend of February.
A 22-week regular season would still be the shortest of the major professional sports leagues (all of which have 24- to 26-week regular seasons). Most who grudgingly accept the inevitability of the 18-game season say "fine, but at least give 'em an extra bye week." Why not four? Four bye weeks gives the players more time to deal with fatigue and wear-and-tear, and it gives die-hards four weeks to check out other teams.
Also, there will be no more posts in August saying "Goddammit football season needs to start NOW--the wait is killing me!" Those posts would be pushed back to July.

That's actually a good suggestion. I'm not sure if it would reduce wear and tear, but I think it might. It's at least worth considering.

this would be the only way i would support the 18 game schedule.

even with more bye weeks that is dangerous to the players imho

Agreed. I'd hate the Saints having 4 bye weeks just cause I wanna see them play, but overall it's a solid suggestion.

I'm guessing an 18 game schedule with 4 bye weeks would have to help out somewhat as opposed to the same schedule with 1 bye week. At least it'd allow for more time to heal for guys.

The owners are not going to add 3 bye weeks with 2 actual games. They'll add one more bye week and it will more than likely push the start of the season up a week or two, and the end back a week or two.

What is?

I hate the 18-game schedule no matter what, but if I have to grit my teeth and bear it, this arrangement would be the least of the evils.

I'm not sure if it would reduce wear and tear, but I think it might.
Also, this way, if a starter gets hurt and is out 4-6 weeks, this naturally increases the chances of his returning and playing a significant number of games. While injuries will naturally increase (likely in proportion to the amount of games added), out-for-the-season injuries will decrease.

TV will like it... more weeks, more games in good weather
but here's the deal. you really gotta spread out the bye weeks. it's impractical to have them before around week 4, and you don't want them after week 16 i guess if you play 22
now i could see double byes twice a season, one around weeks 4-10 and another in weeks 13-18 maybe?
that would mean for the saints, if they play on the 6th, they might not play again until the 27th, if you're ok with that

Doesn't the NFL make more off TV than actual attendance? I think this deal would be great for the owners but I doubt the players would take it. What if you just went 4 bye weeks with 16 games?

Why would they add three bye weeks and zero games?

quote:I'd say no bye weeks in the first four weeks or the last four weeks. That leaves a 14-week period where every team has to have four bye weeks; this means that in each of those 14 weeks, eight or 10 teams will be idle, and there will be 11 or 12 games per week. I personally don't see a problem with this at all.

quote:It's not that I'm not ok with it, but I don't know if it's cool to have a team who played last week playing a team who hasn't played in three weeks. That just seems weird to me.

Good post.

Three more Sunday night games.
Three more Thursday night games.
Three more Sundays when tv is dominated by football.
More money.
Fewer injuries per game.
More football in favorable weather.

Did you forget the fiasco that was the 2 bye week season?
TV and the NFL DID NOT like that after the season was over.

This will never happen because it's too hot in August for them to be playing football. After Corey Stringer and a slew of high school and college players collapsed and died due to heat exhaustion they really cracked down. High school leagues pushed back the start of the season and The NFL may have even pushed the start back a week a few years ago, I can't remember.

quote:Why not? I remember that season (1993 I think), and I seem to remember there not being a week off between the title games and the Super Bowl. If that was the problem, it's easily solved by starting the season sooner.

If not that, what was the problem?
