re: 18-game football schedule idea

Here's the idea I posted the other day:
18 games is going to happen, so I propose that we keep the same conference structure, but play 6 games vs your division, 4 vs a division from the other conference, four versus a different division within your conference, and (here's where we vary from the current format) two from each of the two remaining divisions in your conference, based on where you finished. So if you finished first or second, you play the first AND second place teams from the other two divisions, for example. Put in two bye weeks, and organize the schedule thus (for everyone):
1 Division
2 Division
3 Division
4 Cross over
5 Cross over
6 Intra Conference - previous finish based
BYE
7 Intra Conference
8 Intra Conference
9 Intra Conference - previous finish based
10 Intra Conference - previous finish based
11 Intra Conference
12 Intra Conference
BYE
13 Intra Conference - previous finish based
14 Cross Over
15 Cross Over
16 Division
17 Division
18 Division
Yes, I say that the entire league has the two byes at the same time, which means that no one has a competitive advantage because of it. Plus, it gives the networks to have their analysis split into thirds of the season. The uniformity of the schedule allows us to know what's coming up, you can hype up the cross over weekends, etc. More importance is given to divisional games, and teams only need to play for 6 week "bursts" at a time.
The dual bye system would be more manageable for teams and players, especially with the roster enhancements that I proposed a couple weeks ago (injury list similar to baseball, elimination of the inactive list, et al).

Yes, I say that the entire league has the two byes at the same time,
Week 7: NFC bye
Week 8: AFC bye
Week 14: AFC bye
Week 15: NFC bye
Switch it up each year.
Posted on 2/15/11 at 2:35 pm to xiv
That would also work while accomplishing everyone's goals.

I like this.
ETA: Idk if CBS and FOX would go for it though. Unless during the AFC bye week CBS was allowed to broadcast some NFC games and vice versa.

Options to accomplish this would be to:
* Eliminate 2 pre-season games so that the same total number of games are played
* Expand rosters to allow more players playing time
* Mandate Bye weeks for players, not teams
Players need to quit whining about the risk of injury. Every major sport rotates players out so that they can rest. Football should be no exception. Just because the Patriots play 18 games doesn't mean Tom Brady has to. He can still play 16 if he wants to be a pussy about it. Nobody gives a shite if Brady sits out the Bills game. Stars sit out occasionally in every sport.

quote:I almost agree with this. Given a roster expansion, you'll see teams increase their stables of running backs and linebackers, the most wear-and-tear positions out there. Tomorrow's Jerome Bettises and Ladanian Tomlinsons will average slightly fewer carries per game.

You'll also see, in cases of teams with a non-marquee quarterback, increased use of a backup. Players like Tebow and Cam Newton will become important. You'll see a handful of plays drawn up for the more valuable backups. Your average qb will sit out a series or two per game. Obviously, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, and Manning will continue to attempt to play every snap.
The league will eventually go to 18, and, contrary to popular expectation, players, teams, and coaches will adapt.

College players wouldn't mind. Would think it would mean expanding the roster by at least a few players.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind putting four bye-weeks into the current 16-game sked. For die-hards, the season is too short; making the season three weeks longer couldn't hurt, could it?
Also, that's three more games in favorable weather.
Why not start the season the 2nd week of August, and have four bye weeks per team somewhere in the middle? This makes it less of a big deal to do Thursday games (you could schedule them all with teams coming of bye weeks).
Weeks 1, 2, and 3 - all 32 teams play
Weeks 4, 5, and 6 - 24 teams play
Weeks 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 - 22 teams play
Weeks 15, 16, and 17 - 24 teams play
Weeks 18, 19, and 20 - all 32 teams play

If you start the season in August you're pushing training camp into July and it's too damn hot.

It's been a year long job since the 80's. Training camp is primarily for the new players to adapt to the changes of their new team. Established veterans have little to no problem missing training camp. Besides, "too damn hot" should not be part of the vocabulary of players who get paid to go play outside as adults for a living.

Train indoors or in Canada, eh?

Yeah, high schools have indoor practice fields in some places; NFL training camps can beat the heat.

I could go for this, but I ask "why not 3 bye weeks for the 18 game schedule?" I'm sure the players would be more receptive and maybe the owners could see it as a compromise.
Weeks 1,2,3 - All teams play
Week 4 - NFC South / AFC South
Week 5 - NFC East / AFC East
Week 6 - NFC North / AFC North
Week 7 - NFC West / AFC West
Week 8 - NFC South / AFC South
Week 9 - NFC East / AFC East
Week 10 - NFC North / AFC North
Week 11 - NFC West / NFC West
Week 12 - NFC South / AFC South
Week 13 - NFC East / AFC East
Week 14 - NFC North / AFC North
Week 15 - NFC West / AFC West
Week 16,17,18 - All teams play
Switch order or rotate bye weeks each season
Start regular season 2 weeks earlier into mid-late August and extend season 2 weeks into mid January. Super Bowl gets pushed back 2 weeks as a result.

I love it. One minor tweak, though. You shouldn't have both Wests off the same week, both Souths off, etc; for tv purposes (4pm ET game), there needs to be at least one game in every time zone. Have like NFCE and AFCN off one week, etc. Good stuff otherwise.

The way they have it right now is perfect. They are messing with a good thing. 18 games is too f'n long, but what does Goodell care. If he had his way there'd be a team in Dubai and London as well as one in Tokyo and Beijing by Friday...and a 27 game schedule.
Posted on 2/16/11 at 5:59 pm to Akit1
I don't think you guys realize but the players will have to get paid for those byes. The owners won't want to pay for another week of salaries that they aren't selling tickets for.

I like it, but I just realized something with my scenario and many others in this thread. I only have teams playing 15 games!!! The schedule needs 21 weeks to accommodate for 18 games and 3 byes for each team. So now I'll correct it with your tweak included.
Weeks 1,2,3,4 - all teams play
Week 5 - NFC South / AFC North
Week 6 - NFC North / AFC South
Week 7 - NFC West / AFC East
Week 8 - NFC East / AFC West
Week 9 - all teams play
Week 10 - NFC South / AFC North
Week 11 - NFC North / AFC South
Week 12 - NFC West / AFC East
Week 13 - NFC East / AFC West
Week 14 - all teams play
Week 15 - NFC South / AFC North
Week 16 - NFC North / AFC South
Week 17 - NFC West / AFC East
Week 18 - NFC East / AFC West
Week 19,20,21 - all teams play
BTW: Fantasy Football would never be the same either!

what was the problem?
They ran into all non playoff bound teams playing, and a few of the "contenders" not playing the last few weeks of the season. They didn't have byes the last week, but they did have byes the second to last week.
It was just "bad luck" the way they ended up with some really BAD games on TV...I mean really bad. I mean Cincy vs Clev. for pick one, and it was the only afternoon game on!
