They ran into all non playoff bound teams playing, and a few of the "contenders" not playing the last few weeks of the season. They didn't have byes the last week, but they did have byes the second to last week.
It was just "bad luck" the way they ended up with some really BAD games on TV...I mean really bad. I mean Cincy vs Clev. for pick one, and it was the only afternoon game on!

They just added the extra bye that year to extend the season. It appeared NO thought went into it.
No extra week off before the superbowl was nice though.
