er at Ruston High School in Louisiana who suffered a severe, life-threatening heat stroke during summer practice. He was rushed to the local emergency room, flown to LSU Medical, and then transferred to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.

Lucky he got out of Lincoln General alive, they kill as many as they save.

Wait where is Garvin coaching now?

If it truly is heat stroke and not an underlying condition, how does this even happen any more?

Poor hydration and or diet leading up to said day.

Some schools are switching to winter ball, indoor summer workouts and 7 on 7. That’s probably the safest route.

Ruston has an “indoor”. It’s a covered practice field, not really an indoor, but definitely cooler than straight sun.

What I meant was I know a few coaches who are doing January- February practices and scrimmages instead of spring then they do indoor workouts and running then outdoor 7 on 7 just helmets. They’re having success with it too.

Where are these schools?
This was incredibly rare until recent times?

St. Louis, Deridder, Kinder, Oakdale, South Beau all did it for sure and this was their first year. Some coaches up north introduced the idea to them and mapped out how they’d schedule so that’s where it originated from but can’t remember exactly which school our football coach got it from.

Practices or condition drills?
Because outside of spring practice dates and July 27 - I don’t see how that’s legal via LHSAA

They ran shorter practices and they had one game per week. It lasted 4-5 weeks and started right when we got back from Christmas break. Not sure about the rules, I attended games but I do basketball and golf so I wasn’t on staff.

Coaches can’t control what the players put in their bodies at home. It’s up to the players and their parents.
I’m a middle school teacher and coach. I can tell you from my experience that most teenagers don’t drink enough water at all. There are so many of them drinking energy drinks and taking creatine and other supplements that require being well hydrated. They don’t do it. Just like you can’t wait until your car is hot to put oil in it, the same applies to your body in terms of hydration. I don’t know if this is the case with the young man at Ruston. I’m just sharing what I witness quite often.

Pretty sure that's not legal in Louisiana.

The LHSAA limits winter practice to a maximum of 10 days during a specified window in January and February. This off-season program may be conducted with or without pads but cannot involve live contact or tackling, and it is strictly regulated for participating programs.
Thats the rule but these teams were playing scrimmages. Maybe since there were no seniors playing it can be labeled as JV or something other than HS?

All 11, no kickoffs, punts or PATs but everything else was normal fall scrimmage style. Official refs, medical unit on site, concessions, press box, everything seemed above board to me.
