I am pulling for Tadej, but have come to the realization that Tadej is Jan Ullrich and Jonas is Lance. Tadej will not sniff another tour while Jonas remains eligible to race.
Bump from week 1. Jonas will bury Tadej in the high mountains unfortunately. Great discipline and restraint shown by Jonas. We have watched this film before.

I’m not convinced yet at all.. but I’m happy for it if so.
We need this in the sport.
Still think Pog takes it.

I think it’s more likely Jonas full implodes on a day due to his lack of preparation.

Oddsmakers have Jonas -125 and Pog -110 so they seem to think we see a change in Yellow

I am with you. We are talking about an "off day" for Tadej when he lost by less than a wheel and that was because he started 2 pedal strokes late on the sprint and allowed Jonas to have a bike length at the start. Although slow for Pog he was still pulling on Ving at the line.

In any case, we will have a far better grasp on the matter after this weekend. The Queen stage is Sunday and the weekend has 8800m of climbing.

His face after the stage showed more than fatigue......he looked defeated. UAE put the team on the front for the entirety of a hard stage to win the stage and put time on Jonas. UAE got neither. They will have to change their tactics to win this race.
Everybody knows UAE has the strongest team this year. They dont have to prove it every day.

Visma made this exact mistake in trying to bury him (Pogi) last year on stage 6. They lined it out all day, Jonas launched on the penultimate climb with Pogi on his wheel and he just kept pulling. He pulled over the top and down the descent to the bottom of the final climb. Pogi then hit him and took 24 seconds and the stage win. Pogi took more time on the Puy du Dome stage and I think he was within 30 seconds of Jonas until the TT.

Jonas wasnt in yellow at that point in the 2023 TDF....big difference.

UAE should be riding in a more defensive position. They have the lead and control. It is Vismas job to take the jersey. Tadej should follow Jonas and take shots on a more selective basis.

Had 1+ lead just like Pogi does now and Jai wasn’t a threat. So the situations are pretty similar. Visma attempted to bury him after taking a minute and didn’t adapt on the road. UAE attempted to bury Jonas yesterday and it didn’t work.

Do you think Visma rides that stage the same way with Jonas in yellow?

The yellow jersey team, usually, rides the front at tempo to control the pace of the race. They choose when to lay the hammer down based on circumstances. The rest of the time they conserve energy until those moments.
UAE were so concerned about winning yesterdays stage and burned a ton of matches for nothing. They could have let the break go and still had the same tactics and tried to gain some time at the finish.

Anyway, I love this discussion. Armchair DS banter!

He made that look easy. Cav was scrambling for wheels without a leadout and couldn't get into position in time.

Rog lost a ton of time from that unfortunate pileup. Dropped to 6th in the GC. Ayuso also fell out of the top 5 and almost out of the top 10

Can’t let the greatest athletes in the world fall to page 2.
More importantly I feel terrible for Pog. It had been warned that stages like today are when it goes to shite for a lot of riders due to the monotony and coming off previous stages. “The dog days of the tour” as it was called early in today’s stage before the carnage.
Lots of abandons today for different reasons, but Pog’s luck has been absolute shite.
