So why didn't Tiger drop it closer to the location of his last played shot? Did he think dropping it "2 yards" away was acceptable?
He was getting to a yardage he liked. Given that his previous shot had ricocheted off the pin, going two yards back and hitting the same shot would be perfect yardage. However, he cant go back as far as he wants (even though that is an option) because the line on which he dropped was not the line between where his ball went into the hazard and the hole.

This could be a DQ.
If you were on the tee box and decided to retee, can you go back 2 club lengths?

Gotcha. He simply didn't realize the location of his last shot was not on the path in which the ball went out.

Technically, yes. Two club lengths is the maximum you can go back from the tee markers.

So you're thinking before the first guys tee off at 8:25 cst we should have a ruling?
Posted on 4/13/13 at 6:45 am to unbeWEAVEable
No way they DQ him. It's though to tell if he was within 2 club lengths.

I'm pretty sure on tee box you can BECAUSE you are allowed to go back two clubs lengths from the tee markers on your original shot. After you hit it ob you must re tee so I'm am sure the original rules for a tee sht are in play ..
But in the fairway (or anywhere else) you must play as near as possible to the last shot played. IMHO there would be no uproar about this if he dd not admit to purposely moving back two yards to get to a more comfortable distance.
By admitting that, tiger broke the rule and should be penalized (or DQed). It sucks ....
I honestly don't think anything will happen but we will see.

I would have to imagine. Definitely before he does, but they will probably put out a decision before the first group goes off.

You only get two club lengths on the tee box.
I love the pic

Sounds exactly right. What an idiot.

I cant tell you how many time I have seen someone drop in the fairway to replay a shot and drop it in their own divot. It doesn't have to be in EXACTLY the same spot, but the intent to put it there needs to be there.
The intent was not present in this case.

Gotcha. So it just has to be "as close as possible"..and his drop was clearly not as close as possible

Yea, and because it's not "exact", its always up for debate. You will see a lot of people dropping right next to their divot (usually left or right side), and will redrop if it rolls closer to the hole.
In the video, you can see Tiger almost drop it, then move even further back to drop behind the divot. That ball when it is about to be released in your hands needs to be as close as possible to over your divot. Tiger could have laid down and stretched out and not been able to place the ball in his divot.

correct. again I think you could argue successfully that it in fact was as close as possible BUT Tiger admitted that he dropped it further back to gain a competitive advantage ..
ETA: I just think it funny because by saying he dropped it "two yards farther back to prevent from hitting the flag stick again" I have a feeling that Tiger was trying to be a cocky a-hole ..
Well that may come back to bite him in the arse

If I'm understanding this correctly, Tiger's admittance re: the competitive advantage gained makes his error indisputable..just wow..
Thanks for the info

Exactly. It's an integrity violation at this point.
