I have a son who just graduated HS and will soon be off to Navy nuclear school. He had around $3500 saved up from his summer jobs. Like any red blooded 18 YO, he blew some of it on a used synthesizer, nice headphones, etc.

Now, with future college paid for from the USN and his 529, he wants to invest the rest, but isn't interested in the "safe" stuff - as he said, "Dad, I'm 18, $2k now doesn't matter." He wants to spread it across lotto tickets in the stock market.

So far, as candidates for investment, I have in no particular order:

QS - solid state batteries could be a game-changer
SLI - Yeah, lithium mining is here to stay
ORGN - underlying story sounds promising, doesn't tickle my BS meter
MVIS - will it run again?
BITF, BTBT - will crypto run again?

What else you got? Commentary on any of the above also welcomed.

Others here know more about it than I but TELL might be a decent one to gamble on.

I've got a small position to just keep an eye on it.

I will continue to pump NWBO for anyone looking for a lotto ticket, especially at the current prices ($0.55).

I'd say there is probably a 15-20% chance that it pays off. They have a ton of problems. But if it does, the return will easily be a 10 bagger. That's way better odds than anything you'll find in the casino. I made the odds, so there's that, but still.

Pharma stocks are the black tar heroin of trading.

*I didn't come up with that. Saw it in a vid.

If you really want to help him you should explain to him that it's a much better decision to put the $2k into VTSAX and let it ride

Personally, If I am throwing dust to the wind I would enter a poor man's covered call on a healthy stock. That would give him a monthly income.

Put it in an index fund.

If too boring, put it in ETH or BTC.

The problem with a PMCC on Schwab is that you need L2 options approval to do it. They're not going to give that to an account with $2k in it, even with Dad as admin.

He has nearly $100k in his 529 in things like that. This is his "Buy a hot car after the Navy to drive to college" fund. It either goes, or he drives whatever old car he has then. Something like VSTAX wouldn't even be over $3k by then.

I’m on the ORGN train. BIG time. Purchasing $500-600 biweekly.

It goes against even my own posts here, but a true “IDGAF if it goes to $0” strategy that is quite likely to grow is TQQQ. Take a tech heavy long term strategy and then apply a leveraged approach that gives you even more upside (since you aren’t concerned with the downside risk).

I think that’s more likely to generate a “boom” return than stock picking.

I did the same thing in 2007 and put $4000 on apple.

So just do what I do when in doubt and just buy apple.

My current moonshot stocks are ASTS, SPIR, and BKSY. Any of these space stocks could tank or be a 10 bagger. My other long shots are DOMA and MTTR. DOMA could be gold if housing comes back but is also burning cash fast. MTTR may be too far ahead of its time but could revolutionize commercial real estate. High risk, high reward.

Your son is better off starting a Roth with S&P500 index but these are my Devil may care picks.

SDPI comes up as Superior Drilling Products out of Utah. That what you referring to?

Do not buy tqqq or sqqq for long term holds. They aren’t designed for that

If you want to yolo, do it with SLI calls or AUPH calls atleast 6-7 months out

Sell in the news pop

I'm holding long term. It has a stop for if the bottom drops. Is this a bad plan or something?

SQQQ is basically a day trade short play isn't it?
