I point to it on my spreadsheet, then sigh because I'm not close enough. Then it's on to the next milestone...

On related note, it's amazing how quickly the momentum builds once you hit a fairly large sum. Earlier post made me realize my last major milestone wasn't as long ago as I had thought. NW has climbed 43% since last Aug despite the fact that annual saving/investments no longer make a signifigant impact.

I wonder if watching milestones earlier would have increased motivation or created false sense of futility. Blindly investing as much as feasible in index funds and paying little attention to results worked well for first 15+ years.

Yeah, I really miss those days in Feb-Mar 2009. 100k here, 150 there, day after day. Painful. Stayed in and it turned, but not before some severe cremaster cramps. By the bounce at 666, my voice was decidedly higher.

Would debt be marked on a pack of smokes in red sharpie?

Something I wish I'd done, mark NW milestones with bottle of wine and save the corks. Saw blog post about this. Their technique was to mark each cork w/ NW but in roman numeral so it wouldnt mean anything to houseguests. Minor milestones marked w/ wine and bigger ones w champagne. So like every $10k, a wine cork and champagne every $100k. It would have been good to mark and encourage progress early in the journey starting from zero.

Damn

It’d suck to have to drink 2 bottles of wine every day

At this point, no one.

I shared with my mom when I saved my first 10k. We grew up poor and this was the magic number she always said to save for emergencies. I’ve fixed her finances much later in life but the poor choices are baked in. Sharing only reminds her of those choices.

I had dinner with a girlfriend when I paid off my student loans. She’s a doctor who introduced me to Mint. It improved my spending habits but I already had good savings habits with 15% going to retirement accounts. When we looked at each other’s accounts she got sad. She was 300k in debt from private college and med school with zero cash flow or retirement savings despite six figure income. I had zero debt, positive cash flow, and healthy retirement accounts despite being a screw up with a crap job. I learned not to share.

6 figures? $7? You're pretty young. Either is good. Just curious.

I talk to my oldest daughter. She's my mini-me. Competitive as hell. Jacked and strong, built like me. Good thing she's elite in cheer and gymnastics. Tougher than an old leather boot. I've always talked money with them. They are both savers, but she's become an investor. Just 22 and I wouldn't be shocked if she hits 7 figures by 26. Her and her mom talk about the cheer shite. We talk politics, investments, conspiracy shite and SHTF scenario planning.

A true sir never reveals all the details, but let’s just say he’s no longer a vigin ;)

R/financialindependence

But seriously, I go there to read about others accomplishments. I've had a couple of friends ask me about what to do with money in the last couple of months and I love to share strategy. But at a certain point it's tough to share with people beyond saying "yea I have a good bit saved now"
